What size are the speakers in the front door and the rear hatch area? I'm looking at replacing the bad sounding stock speakers. I've been to four different stores and gotten four different answers. The front one's look to be 6 1/2 inch and the rear ones look like they are 6X9's.
Thanks,
Kurt

You are right, 6 1/2 & 6x9's, that is the size I replaced mine with.. straight swap. What other sizes did these shops say?

xcanuck, what brand and model speakers did you upgrade to? I'm considering this swap but I'm not sure if it makes that big of a difference.

the fronts are actually like 6 3/4, but 6 1/2 work well.

I put in JL Audio's up front and kenwood's in the back. The back is pretty shallow, so be careful or you'll dent your quarter panel (I've seen this done on an X) frown

The fronts are actually what's called a 6 1/2 S . Often regular 6 1/2 won't fit but you can either make adapters or purchase them so the holes and depth line up. As far as the rear be carefull when you purchase 6x9s because if the magnet is too big you will dent the panel as mentioned. You can actually get great acoustically matched sound out of that rear fill area with a set of 6 1/2s and just make or have the stereo guy make a board to mount the speakers to and cover the space leftover. Then dynomat . You'll have more choices of speaker that way without having to worry about speaker sizes.

For the front, I've seen 5x8, 5x7, 5 1/4 and 6 3/4. For the back I saw 6x9's twice, 6 1/2, and one other. Funny thing is, I had one guy argue with me that their book was correct (on the 5x7's), so I took him out there and showed him the setup. He just walked back into the store and did not say another word to me.
Thanks for the info.

The difference? It's like a concert in my truck! Boston Rally 6 1/2s seperates wtih crossover with eclipse 4 channel amp. Open up your door and look at those paper speakers . then go toa stereo shop and look and listen to theirs. There Is a difference!

remember that the stock head unit isn't that powerful so a good amp is neccessary.

I went with a Clarion 5 channel (APX600.5) because it has a high to low converter built in, though I ended up not using it.

And remember to spend more on the fronts than the back speakers (cause you're up front)

I went with Boston Acoustics
Rally's RC-620 Components for the front,
RX-97 for the rear ) 6x9 3way.
Speakers were a straight swap, no extra cutting, or problems. Do a quick search here for speakers... someone else replaced the rears with the same ones last year and had to cut due to the magnet, Boston revised the depth this year so they now fit. Speakers were match with Nakamichi head unit (12 CD's in dash)

Hey xcanuk how do you like those RC-620s ? I put them in a month ago and I don't think I've ever been happier with a speaker. They sound amazing! Are you running an amp to them? My head unit (eclipse 5650 ;6 disck in dash) isn't powered so I'm using the eclipse 36401 amp for them and it's very close to perfect.

Love the front, still thinking and most likely will add an amp. The 6x9's really add alot as well, especially when I have the rear seats down.
