Hey all!

A while back we had brought up the topic, of would the 2003 Subwoofer Enclosure fit in the 2000-2002's.

We thought of using it, because it was a factory trim panel, that housed either an 8" or 10" woofer.

I was curious, if in this time-span, if anyone has tried it out?

If it's a quality enclosure, it could be great smile

i am currently working on doing that. i am in the process of trading panels with a guy that has teh sub woofer panel. i think that i might end up buying his sub enclousure as well. if i do then i will either keep the stock rf sub or up grade to something else. but as far as power goes i have an amp that should provide enough bump for what i am going for. but just an fyi for those who have the 2002- 2003 xterra's with out the sub panel, it fits flawlessly all you will have to do is trim the cargo carpet. later on

just an update. i did buy the sub off that guy. he sold it to me for a really good deal so i could not turn it down. what i plan on doing now is disconnecting the little 2inch speaker that is in the box and have just the sub hooked up for now. then down the road i will end up taking out that stock sub and replacing it with something that is higher quality. hope this helps for those who are looking at doing this for a little extra bump bump.

ecfiffer...
I suppose your X is a 2002 or 2003 correct? I have read that the frame behind the side panels are different so those with 2000-2001 Xterra cannot modify and install the OEM RF 8" side mounted woofer/panel?

Thx,
Will

Will. Yeah my x is a 02. and i have heard the same thing about the 2000-2001 bodies are different in that respect. what i actually recomended to another XOC member was to go onto crutchfields web site and look for RF's 6 1/2" subs they hold 150 RMS and i told him to pull the stock 6X9's and build up a little box back in that cavity and place those subs there. that is what i was planning on before i got the panel and the sub. hope this help eric

Just an FYI I installed my amp tonight just so that was done and out of the way so I just need to install the sub when I get it. Which should be on tuesday. I installed the amp under the front passanger seat like most XOCer's. The install took a number of hours becasue I was a dumb ass and hopped from one thing to the next with out finishing what I had started. When it is all done I will post some pictures. But that may not happen till I get back from my honey moon! Eric smile

for those who are still reading this thread, i got the sub and installed it with little easy. the harest part was getting the amp hooked into the sub. and an fyi for thos ewho are looking at this mod, the sub is a dual voice coil and can not hold that much power. its distorting with a little more then 100 watts. hope this helps eric

So do you have to add an amp to have this factory sub? And do you have to run different wire back there or can you just hook it up to the speaker wire that is there?

Most likely the sub was matched to the factory head amp in terms of power handling, to cut costs would be a primary reason... so I wouldn't be suprised if you have to get a stronger sub to handle an outboard amp.

That's something I hadn't thought about really... the weak sub. Still, it's nice to have the factory integrated look going on..

greggovader i have an old RF series 1 amp that i added and it now powers the sub. so yes, i had to run a new wire back to the sub. i think i will actually run another wire and use the other voice coil and run the amp at stereo in stead of mono. down the road i would like to get a new sub in there but for now, the sub is plenty loud. hope this helps eric smile

ecfiffer,

I been trying to figure out what is actually in the new 2003 sub enclosure. From your posts above it sounds like they just put a subwoofer speaker in place of rearleft speaker. What else is in the subwoofer enclosure? Is the new 2003 subwoofer powered by the same feed as the old 2002 rear left speaker or did they add another wire running from the amp?

I wouldn't recommend running a dual voice coil sub stereo off the amp. You won't have that sub long. You make a parallel connection withing the coils of the sub. Or live and learn and make a great story up along the way.

NPT X The sub box is in place of the rear left speaker just as you said. the box is quite big and actaully is formed for go past the sheet metal that the speaker is attached too. the stock rf system has an amp that has a channel for the sub. but since i dont have the stock rf system i had to add an amp that i have. Email me directly if you have any other questions. hope this helpped Eric

Just buy the JL stealthbox. It will sound much better.

I recently upgrading to a custom ported enclosure for my 10" JL sub. The box is 14"x 14" x 14". It hits like a mutha.

I was surprised at how little space it took up in the cargo area. It leaves me plenty of room for all of my gear that I usually carry back there.
