Ok a truck with out limited slip diff when in snow, mud, slick road,..etc, etc means if you start to spin your rear tires that only one tire will sit there and spin making your oposite tire useless. Adding a limited slip diff allows both wheels the ablity to gain traction giving you better grip. If you keep your off roading to the light hearted kind (not sinking your X in a mud bog) you should be fine going off road. I had an Explorer for many years and it had a regular diff and I too it many places off the beaten path.
