I am doing a lot of work on my property creating recreational trails for cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing and hiking etc. The area is pretty rugged and most trails are accessable by my X. It's a mix rocky ridges, mixed forest and boggy areas.

It's nothing you want to traverse with any speed and usually 4hi to 4lo creeping over stumps rocks and the like.

My question is. With this type of terrain is there any upgrade that you would recommend to account for any "deficiencies" in the stock off-road capabilities of my 2000 X?

It's not really the place I want to be and have something break on me.

Very cool of you to use your land like that. One word of warning, make sure everyone signs a waiver. A sign saying the same thing will not always cover you. We put on a hare scramble on my buddies farm some years back and made everyone sign before they entered.
As far as the xterra, some good 31" tires, rear sway bar disconnects,aal's and the idle arm brace.
All can be found at calamini or others.

What exactly does the AAL's do to improve the X Offroad, and the Sway Bar Disconnects ?

AAL's lift the ass-end of the X, providing a better departure angle. I believe the sway bar disconnects make it quicker and easier to disconnect the rear swaybar. The rear axle has much better articulation without the sway bars attached.

Thanks for the comments. Due to a broken leaf spring this summer I am now running with 4 leaves as suggested by the trucking spring shop I brought it too. I'm thinkin the Idler Arm Brace may be a good idea due to the un-even ground I'm covering. As for the 31" rubber. I still do a good deal of hwy driving so I'm trying to economize on my gas mileage I find the Toyo Open Country's I have serve me pretty well.

As for the trails. Yeah we love them. It's remote enough so not allot of people get on them. We allow very limited hunting during deer season and have hunters sign land use forms.

I should get off my butt and post some pics of the X and trails.

and another encouraging point/observation...
as you can see, the upgrades suggested are minor, this is a testament to the capabilities that this truck has offroad. you can rule all kinds of terrain, just practice and pay attention to your offroad driving technique and upgrade the truck some and you should be fine.
the xterra is a quite capable vehicle once you disconnect the sway bar in the back and stick it in 4lo.

Only if you do shackles. I talked with SLR when buying my AALs and shocks and was you only needed to get the longer with shackles. With just AALs you might bust a shock going with the extended ones.
