I broke my long side inner yesterday right at the carrier, so I'm in the market for upgraded shafts and joints in the D44.

Post your links if you have a suggestion. I found a couple different sets...one by Alloy, and another set from Superior. The Warns are a bit more pricey, and I'm looking to do this as 'on the cheap' as possible while still upgrading to something a little less breakable.

When I snapped my stock shafts in Moab I replaced them with the Superior CrMo shafts.

I have been pleased with them.

Boring Napa joints.

If anything will break it will be those.. and they are cheap and easy to fix.

Myself, I prefer the hub to be the fusible link since that's the quickest to replace on the trail. I'll be going for some serious Ujoints.

Yeah don't spend the money on good shaft and f it up with cheap U joints. In fact if your shafts have a warranty they won't honor it if you blow the up with cheap joints.

It did make a cool sound when it snapped.

I'm running the complete offroad shafts with the good spicer U joints.

Need pics wink

Longfield Super U-joints or CTM along with:

Alloy usa 4340 Chromoly shafts (10-Year warranty) or Superior Axle 4340 Chromoly HD shafts.

I’m not a big fan of the Yukon joints of shafts because the tests and people I’ve seen run them haven’t had been nearly as good as the other two. They maybe cheaper short term but you get what you pay for long term IMO. I don't know if its the additional heat treating that Alloy or Superior does that makes them stronger but most of the comp guys run these two brands.

I ended up ordering the Alloys. They come preassembled with their proprietary Ujoints. I called a local shop here that handles them and asked about the Ujoints. They're considerably beefier than the 760X Spicer joints, though they're not CTMs. I had been running 760Xs in the stock shafts and did have the bearings in one fail last summer - fortunately, I caught it before it grenaded.

$475 shipped. That's cheaper than 4 Wheelers Supply here in Phoenix's COST!

A guy on N4W found that link.

Well, I ordered axles Monday and they got here today...not bad for free shipping!

I tore it down after work and got the broken stub out of the carrier. What a nice clean break!

New axles are in. I'm 4wd again. Woot!

cool

That's awesome that they came with the U joints already installed. I ruined one of mine (broke a bearing cap) before I figured out the trick of putting them in right.

Definitely made for a quicker job. I'm getting so used to tearing down the D44, that the whole job took about 2 hours...20 minutes of that was fishing out the broken splined portion of the axle still stuck in the carrier on the long side.

I'm guessing the big magnet retreiver tool worked? That thing is a must for axle kits.

It did, but like everything, there's always a story to go along with it.

The magnet is a booger to use because you have to keep it from sticking to the axle tube and center it so you can get through the diff seal and into the side of the carrier where the broken stub was. I fished around for 10 minutes trying this, and I finally got it in there. However, when you pull it out, the magnet gets hung on the seals, and I pulled the telescoping thingy apart, so the end of my handle was now about 6" down the axle tube, and I couldn't quite reach it with my fingers.

So I got creative. I took some wiring conduit pipe and cut a piece about the right length, and slid that in there, and slid the magnet handle inside it, then I slid that all the way in against the broken piece to guide the magnet right on it. Once I was on, I twised the pipe a bit to bind up the magnet handle inside and pulled everything out...the magnet, the pipe, and the broken stub all at once.
