so i have been watching extreme 4x4 alot lately on my ipod. what im wondering is could you build a custom 4 link set up front and rear to clear tires bigger than 35's? is it basically the bars holding it in from side to side and front to back and on each side to allow the articulation with the axle only being held down by the springs?

Your tire size isn't determined by which type of solid axle suspension you choose - that's more about fender clearance, axle strength, and engine power...

4 links are tempermental if they aren't set up just right (Cherokees have factory 4 links and suffer from "death wobble" with short arm lifts).

The coolest setup I've seen is Nissannut's 3 link pathfinder HERE

Yep that is the basic idea but you will need to engineer/design a couple of custom cross members and move the gas tank or use a different tank, the tank sits right where attachments HAVE to go for a 4 link. A 80-90 pathfinder tank could work and it would have to go where you spare tire is. So that will have to be relocated as well if you have not already.

but theoretically (sp) you could just make the links long enough with the right springs to fit as big of a tire as your axle and engine can take right?

The links have ZERO relation to what size tire you can fit on your truck.

In the first generation Xterra (probably Frontier as well but I can't be positive about that), the stock gas tank is in the way no matter the length of the links you use. Any way you cut it, the links will hit the tank limiting either stuff or droop.

Edited to ask: How big are you wanting to go tire wise?

You can 4 link the rear in a 1st gen and leave the gas tank alone if you want wink

Trail gear even makes a kit, whole or in parts that could be made to work, just add a center link like on that frontier.

I’ve been saving up and planning for my rear link suspension; time and funds permitting hope to have it done in May. Right now I’m leaning towards a reverse rear tri-link no trackbar on mine with swaybar, similar to what rancho has for the JK

I suppose.... but you could also make leaf springs as big as you like etc... any axle swap will give you this option.

I'm happy with my 35's.

Here is a kit for a Early Bronco using a 9" in the rear, I am sure it could be adapted to work on a Xterra. http://www.jamesduff.com/newproducts/new_eb.asp

Scroll about halfway down.

The OP was more likely than not being told to get a double triangulated 4 link, not a 3 link with trackbar.

Gotta look out for those really extended track bar mounts. They hit things hard at full stuff.
