Im just wondering is there any big difference between regular and plus gas other than the higher octane? and if i run my X on it, will it end up helping it perform better or will it just be a waste of my extra cents?

There's not a "performance additive" that's in Plus gas. The only change is octane, most all stations have detergents and regular additives in all their gas. Some stations add extra stuff like techron to their gas but its in all octanes.

The only places you have to watchout are cheap gas stations that have bad gas.

Just a waste of money...unless you re-tune to take advantage of the slower burn for higher octane.

I read on some government energy site that the octane level will not improve your mileage and that it is a big waste of money. Just put the grade that the manufacturer recommends you put in your car and you will be better off.

Plus is a complete waste of money here, anyway.

It has almost the same octane as regular for almost the same price as premium.

Use either regular or premium.

Since gas hit about $1.80/g around here, I've been buying premium($2). I think it improves my gas mileage a bit.

Speaking of gas. Just kinda curious as to what other people are paying for gas right now. Here in Eugene, Oregon we are at the following

$1.96 for regular
$2.06 for plus
$2.16 for supreme

I paid $2.08 yesterday at the cheapest place in town for regular.

I filled up the Jetta the other day and it was $2.25 for Premium.

There is no power advantage to the higher octane gases. The only difference is the combustion point of the fuel. This only makes a difference in higher compression engines (recommended for the supercharged Xterras(more air and fuel in same area as non s/c models)) or engines burning other fuels like Nitrous.

Please, no, let's not turn this into ANOTHER gas prices thread... All that matters is what you're paying. If I'm paying $1.27/gallon and you're paying $2.15, whatcha gonna do?

It doesn't, and it's a complete waste of money on the normally aspirated V6.

I'm gonna try a tank or two of 91 octane from 7-11 and see what difference it makes. Traditionally I run Sams 93 octane because of the price... but if it's not much different in price than 7-11 (about 5-6 cents) and I get better mileage... well, at least I'll have a choice from having to run 93 all the time (cause that's pretty much all I can find around here).

I doubt it makes much performance difference, but I have seen reports that the Toulene/Xylene used to bump up octane is actually lower in energy/volume and causes more carbon buildup than other components in normal gas... it certainly adds to the price!

The main reason gas companies offer a 'mid-grade' gas at 89 octane is marketing research which shows that when people are offered 2 choices, most choose the less expensive. But when offered 3 choices, most choose the mid-level product. So human nature drives people to buy 89 octane gas when it doesn't do anything but cost you more money. Nor will 93 octane do anything for an engine that doesn't require it.

I used to have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid ES with a 3.2L engine (larger of the engines offered that year) and oddly, the OM specifically stated that premium fuel was not recommended.

Human nature at its worst. My sister in law with an old beater ford explorer , who can barely afford putting $5 worth of gas at a time insists on using premium because more expensive is always better. If thats the case why not buy jet fuel?

Yup - I've seen chevy manuals stating the same thing... Super is not required. I've also seen lawn mower manuals stating super is a no-no, and regular unleaded is preferred....

Wish i could fit an intercooler or something in there so I didn't need 91 in the first place... but when ya look at total cost it always seems cheaper just to pay the difference and leave it stock.
