#426484 - 28/03/07 08:19 PM 3" Calmini S/L with 285/75/16

Ok so I know that this has most likely been talked about on here before but I have not been able to find anything on it. I am about to install the 3" suspension lift from Calmini for my 02 4x2 X. I am currently running 265/75/16 Nittos without having to do any trimming. My main question and concern is that am I going to be able to run 285/75/16s with just the suspension lift bc I really don't want to put a body lift on it. Thanks guys!

Well, your problem is that when you stuff the suspension, it pretty much puts the tire to the same point whether or not you have an SL....so what ever hits w/o the SL, also hits WITH the SL....with the break being that it has to travel further to get up there...so if doing milder wheeling, you have a little leeway...but if getting full compression, it will hit as it did without the SL.

The BL is what makes room for the larger tires...or taking off the fenders, etc.

laugh

Of course, some tires run small, etc...and the 33's will only stick out another 1/2" more than the 32's you now have...so that's the maximum rub you'd be up against...

285/75/16's are a skinny 33, like a 33x11.5/16...so they do clear a bit easier than a 33x12.5, or the 305/70/16, etc.

I'm running 305/70/16's with a 3" SL + 2" BL....and the tire clearance is all from the BL when I'm stuffed.

Well, the PML is made for you...crank the T-bars and add 3" longer rear shackles, and you're 1.5" taller.

laugh

If you remove all the front wheel well plastic, and are willing to trim the parts that hit on full lock and compression...you can still run the 285/75/16's...but a bit of metal will need to go here and there...or just take it easy until you can get the BL on there.

There's a few people on the various boars SELLING used 2" BL's btw...as in they got them, then wrecked the X, or decided to get the 3" BL, or whatever.

laugh

There's ALSO a thread or 500 discussing what parts you need to make your OWN BL, w/o paying for the pre-fabbed kit.

Boomer! Cool, another Sooner. [ThumbsUp] I say go for the 285's and either cut or BL. Don't fear the BL, it's is cheap, easy and basically gives more performance to your rig in terms of tire travel than that SL does.

Thats right! Sooner born and Sooner bred! So if I decided to just keep my Nitto 265/75s on for now is it real difficult to just crank the t-bars? Thanks for all the help guys!

I’m running a 285/75/16 (33.1x11.5x16) with only a PML right now. I have removed the plastic in the front and have fully flexed front and rear. So far the only part that rubs is a small bit in the front, right behind the front wheels (in front of the doors). I will be trimming this weekend for clearance and will be checking again. Now granted, this has just been ramp flexing, no actual trail runs as of yet, but it was bump stop to bump stop front and rear.

This was before the molding was off all the way.
I will be installing SLR UCA's soon. We shall see how it all works out.

No - t-bar crank is easy...the first time, about an hour, the second time, about 20 minutes.

You need the longer shackles with it....that's another hour the first time, etc.

Figure 2 hrs to do the shackles and crank...then go get a wheel alignment.

laugh

And - yeah - the trim for 33's w/o the BL means the edge where the front mud flaps used to mount to has to be clearanced...either BFH, sawzall, or whatever...just a little bit off, and you're good to go. (Its metal in the way)

Thanks guys for all the help...I think that i am just going to do a pml for now considering the budget however knowing me and my constant spending i will most likely end up wanting more...here is a pic of my baby in Siverton, CO (outside of Durango) which has amazing trails for the novices like me.
