The stock shocks are roughly 12" collapsed, 21" expanded. 9" total travel.
You can fit shocks that collapse to 16-17" though...and expand to a longer than stock length if you want to.
Shocks with 16" - 26" range are pretty popular, 10" total travel...and fit both stock and lifted X's w/o a problem.
The Bilstein 5100's are great, the Rancho's are pretty good.
There's a few others out there, most were less good than those.

Pro comps are not that popular....hence sales to try to move them.

I put the Rancho 5000's on my dad's TJ for him, he does all city/hwy driving...it's an affordable shock at $45 each that really improved the ride and handling of his Jeep...

The Rancho's might be ok then, they're twin tube, so they're not going to have the same travel, but the valving on the 5000's is better than on the stock shocks, especially if they are shot.
Get them in the length ranges I listed in the post near the top of the thread...as close as you can get, use the collapsed length of 16" as you limiting factor....
...and get them as long as you can out from that point...the collapsed length is the only one that you have to watch in this case.
