I've googled my ass off. Every program I find is limited to icons. My buddy sent me an exe file with a bunch of pictures on it. Need to figure out how to get the damn pics separated and saved. Ideas?

It's time-consuming, but you can take screen shots of the pics. Look on your keyboard, I'm 99.9% certain you have a key that has "Print Screen" on it. sometimes it's a combo button so you'll have to hit like "Shift-Print Screen" or something.

Anyway, then you can paste the screen shot into a photo app, and crop the pic.

Run the .exe file. Once installed, find where the program was installed. From there, you should find the individual pictures you are after. Usually-pictures and other items are compressed when the file is unexecuted or not installed. Hope this helps. [drink]

It doesn't install anything. It's like the old dos way - just runs. I'll give the print screen a shot tomorrow. Does it actually print or print to file?

There's Alt+Print Screen which does a screen capture of the active window.
Then there's Ctrl+Print Screen which does a screen shot of your entire monitor.

Each time you take a screen shot it copies the image to the clipboard (you need to paste it into a word document or something similar.

Hope that helps [Wave]

Well, that didn't work. I get a message saying the author doesn't allow saving any graphical information. Next idea?

Wow, now this is a challenge!

Couple questions...

1) does it run full screen while displaying the photos?

If not, the only thing I could think of would be to start the .exe file, then open another app (notepad, for example) and give that window the focus. Some people capture the "printscreen" key event, but only if their app has the focus. If you give the focus to another app you might be able to get some screenshots.

Yeah, runs it full screen slide show. It's like a power point presentation done as an exe.

This is the point where I bow out. Sorry man, this one sounds like a lost cause.

Got a Mac?

or maybe VMware. I would guess that I could use the screen capture ability in Parallels to do what print screen won't do inside windows, or at the least use the screen capture ability in Mac OSX since both of these would be outside the ability of Windows to prevent you from using the Print screen function under Windows set by the creator of the .exe program. I've never use VMWare but would guess it has the same hypervisor ability to capture screen shots of the guests, other VM hypervisor's I've used do.

This may be a dumb question at this point, but can't you just ask your buddy to send you the pictures?

He doesn't have them - just the exe. Sent it to me to see if I could get anything.

Which application made the EXE file? If it is Flash then you can't extract the images without the aid of a hack program.

A thought...if you create a shortcut to the exe is there anything that can be placed in the Target or Start in fields that could force a window border around the app when it runs? Then you might have better luck with opening notepad or something else and taking the focus off the exe app when trying the print screen.

I don't know/remember if there are any parameters you can add to the shortcut props to do this though. Anyone else know if this is possible?

does it do an extract before running, could try looking in %tmp% or %temp%.

If you are using XP do this from a cmd prompt to find your temp locations

echo %tmp%
echo %temp%

Also, i use a third party program for screen capture (Snagit) and would be willing to see if it works. PM me if ya want....
