I got my x 4x4 about two weeks ago. At 470 miles now, it only got an average MPG of 13.6 combined street/highway. This number is so disappointing when other x owners here claimed a 16+ city and 20+ highway mpg. Can I do anything about it? BTW, I am in pittsburgh, pa.

I feel your pain, mine is about the same. I have an automatic, though. Do you? Mine has improved with me driving the speed limit and not revving the engine. Set the cruise control to the speed limit on the freeway. My MPG has increased to about 14.6 with city/highway combined and highway is about 19.5. with those 2 changes. Also make sure your tires are aired up correctly. Good luck!

not an 05 owner but don't forget the winter fuel will lower MPG also, i bought my 2001 last novemeber, didnt get more than 15mpg over the entire winter so i was pretty disapointed in the numbers given on the sticker, but once spring came around and summer i was averaging 16-17.5mpg, s the winter blend will effect it too

Thanks for the tips. Mine is an automatic also. How many miles have you had on ur x? Is it normal that mpg is lower during the break-in?

I am notmally get between 16-18mpg combined driving in the same location (Pittsburgh), but I have noticed that for about the last three weeks it's been more like 14-16mpg under the same driving conditions.

What I have found is keep the X under 70. Once you get over 70 you can almost watch the gas gauge drop.

BTW, you should check out http://www.westpaxterraclub.com/

Lot's of great people over there.

First week I had mine I averaged just over 20 mpg on the first two tanks, mostly highway, but some stop and go thru Chicago....not light-footed either. I did use the cruise for about half the miles though. I was pleasnatly surprised after seeing everyone's issues with fuel economy...

i have about 1400 miles on my new X, but recommended break in is 1200 and im still going to do break in style driving for a bit more. Japanese engines are tight and usually get better milage after break in. Its not recommended to use cruise at all during break in. you should be varying engine RPMs and not running it for very long periods of time. Durring break in driving ive have my combo of highway and city range from 16-19.

I just hit 1100 miles. First tank of gas did a little over 300 miles, pushed it down real low to empty tho as the Low fuel warning light didn't come on for ages and I wanted to make sure it worked. Since then I've been filling just about when the warning light comes on and getting about 280 miles on a tank. So I figure there is a 3 gallon reserve when the low fuel warning light comes on. 19 gallon tank, so I'm doing about 280 miles on 16 gallons = 17.5mpg.

I think I'll start printing fuel receipts tho and scribble the mileage on them, so I can get a more accurate reading. I also have the 6 spd MT tho, which would explain a little better gas mileage than you AT guys.

Edit to add: 99% city driving - Stop & Go.

For some reason I think it's a 21 Gallon tank. I could be wrong.

My first tank gave me 15.9mpg with my daily commute of 3 miles city and 3 miles highway each way. I thought that was pretty fair. The second tank was about 19.5mpg due to a 240 mile highway trip on top of about 100 miles of commuting. During the trip I tried to vary my speed between 60 and 70mph.

My low fuel light comes on after about 17 gallons.

You are correct

The owners manual says 21 1/8 gallon capacity so I will give it to ya.

I've been averaging in the 18's for most of my driving. I have gotten up to 22 mpg on the interstate driving at 65 mph. The lowest I've gotten so far is 16 mpg and that was mostly city driving. I have 4300 miles on the truck and have had it since last month.

Mine hasn't been good. It seems this vehicle is "capable" of good mileage when conditions are perfect, but anything that disturbs that delicate balance makes it go down in a hurry. My average with highway and city combined without the kayaks on top or a trailer behind me is around 15. Yuck.

I've got the same vehicle as you (xlover15211)....
I commute 20 miles mixed rolling hills rural & suburban, and I got in the 19s at around 1000 miles and the last time I checked (at about 3500) it was over 21. Usual highway speeds are around 60.

I have been known to wait for a downhill to accellerate, I use the cruise control a lot, and don't usually accellerate over 2500-3000 rpm. Don't know the weight of your foot, but you should be getting better than that. It should also improve as it breaks in. Don't forget to check your tire pressure - the cold weather reduces it.

It was discussed a while back on the Z forums that the ECU in the newer VQ engines runs the mix a bit rich for the first few thousand miles, resulting in some sub-optimal MPG.

Maybe it is the winter gas up here in Canada but my fuel economy started out really good and now with 16000 km (10 000 miles. I seem to be getting awful econmy in the 13-14 mpg on the highway. Don't know what it is.

The winter gas does have an effect on MPG down here as well. I've been keeping track of mine since the second tank. I think I have only missed two fill ups since I bought my truck last month. laugh

...and I was beginning to think I was the only one in Southern California with a 4x4 manual trans vehicle. You rock, NSchara!

I've got the same problem with my gas mileage too. Sucks! I don't have a heavy foot and have been taking extra steps to audit my own driving to figure out the problem. I'm guessing the break-in thing with the computer might absolutely be the culprit. Guess i'll just have to wait and see.

Gas tank is 21.1 gallons according the sticker and owner's manual. After hitting the E marker on the fuel guage, I filled up and it only took 18.5 gallons. Guessing that there's a reserve of about 2.5 to 3 gallons on it.
