I just got an '06 xterra and added a receiver hitch. What should the standard drop be for the hitch?

The one that the guy recommended was a 2 1/4" drop, but it seems too hang the trailer too low. It may just be the trailer since it's homemade.

I did a search, but couldn't find anything.

I have several. Which one I use depends on which trailer I'm hauling. When I use the car dolly, I use the 3 1/2 drop, if it's the landscape trailer I use the 2 1/2 drop. The bike trailer is a lift of 1 inch (custom trailer). And my suspension is stock.

It all depends on the trailer, I have three that I use with different trailers, with the deepest drop being 6 inches. It could use about another inch so that it would not drag the back of the trailer across the apron at the end of hte driveway. The pop up uses a 2 inch drop to tow flat.
