Not true at all, there's plenty to be done.. Performance mods (intake, exhaust), Wheels/tires, Xtra lights, seat covers, floormats, airfreshener, etc [ThumbsUp] 2or 4wd, your X is sure to make your drive time more enjoyable [ThumbsUp]

Don't let the 4x4 for snobs give you crap. =) The 2 wheel drive will give you plenty of entertainment. You can learn self control and moderation tools that will keep you safe in the future. With the right tires and a moderate lift, your 2 wheel drive will kick.
Enjoy your X and welcome

He's a member of XOC. One of his XOC buddies who go out with him will pull him out/up/over what ever it takes.

Ok I have got it!
The first mod you really need is a winch and new bumper to mount it on.
Back on the road...away you go...

hi.. have been a loyal Nissan owner over 20 years.. had 3 Sentras - all manual trans. Recently bought an Xterra (2001 SE- automatic). I drive over 50 miles to work from Pittsburgh through windy back roads of Western PA.. keeping the Sentra for commuting because of great MPG, but wanted a reliable 4wd for snowy days. I'm wondering if I made a mistake, because I've been getting mixed messages from different reviews on Xterra about its stability on ice and steep snow covered hills and curves. I was going to go with a Jeep Cherokee Sport, but loyal to Nissan for its reliability. Do I need special tires on my Xterra for winter driving? Any advice on tires, shifting to 4WD, etc? thanks!

The stock BFG Long Trials or General Grabbers are not great in snow (but no worse than any other all-season radials). Traction was vastly improved when I put on Bridgestone Winter Duelers but you will probably notice improvement with something like the BFG AT/KO or Bridgestone Revos if you don't want dedicated snows.

As for 4WD, use it when the roads are slick. Once you have locked the hubs, you can shift back and forth between 4 and 2WD at will (as long as you don't unlock) to take into account changing road conditions.

I drive in upstate NY where there's plenty of snow and have NEVER had winter traction or handling problems in the X while driving reasonably.

I think that last line is what escapes many people. Driving reasonably, given the conditions. I don't care how great your car is.. if you're driving too fast for the conditions / tailgating, etc... you're gonna have problems. Drive within the limits and I doubt your X will fail you.
