Just a quick hello to the group... from Cedar Park, Texas...

Name is Shawn but I go by wxrman (weatherman) in the internet world.

Weather guesser by day... dad, husband, nerd, storm chaser by night.

A few pics of my xterra with a few of the toys I'm installing... never enough time.

pics of the X

standard side shot

standard shot from the back
shot of the roof with 2meter ham, scanner, and APRS antenna

horrific mess of wires that power the APRS setup - stil need to install into a box.

shot of sub setup, APRS, fridge, emergency kit, and amber strobe light

Gift from wife... christian symbol.. but with an "edge"... I like it.

radio, scanner, siren/pa, and bag with wheel cleaner (on floor).

VERY CLOSE shot of Kenwood TMV7A mounted on map light console... awesome location.

Why not get a D700A and simplify your set up?

Good question on the D700a...

knowledge... just haven't looked that deep into what other radios offer.

I beta-tested Gibson Ridge Analyst and already had the gps, and radio, so adding a Tinytrak was the cheapest route.

That Kenwood has some history to it. It was in a command post vehicle in Jarrell... A year or so, afterward, the vehicle was decomissioned and I got the radio.

I'll look into the D700...

.. wink ... see... learning stuff already!

Well, you should also check out the SWXC forum and www.swxc.org. We have a couple of hams in the club.

Sweet! The W5AC club advisor at A&M had an APRS setup - but that's the only one I've ever seen (obviously I'm not a very active ham).

Hey Robert - I never thought to ask you... were you in the amateur radio club when you were at A&M? I spent a lot of time hanging out in the ham shack on top of the MSC listening to 40 and 80m chatter and gazing out at the drill field.

Nope, I didn't get my license until after SWXC, had to wait until they dropped the morse code requirement (for at least the lowest level, now waiting for them to eliminate it for the rest so I can upgrade). I had always wanted to do Storm spotting since I moved to DFW (after A&M), but didn't know anybody that had a radio, and couldn't justify spending the money on the equipment just for that. When the club started up, Carlton got his license, and then Walt and I got our's. Then Jack, then Keith, then Poorboy, then ...

Actually you've seen another APRS setup, I've got one in my truck. It always me to send and receive, where as the tinytrak is a transmit only function.

Connect the GPS to the D700 and turn on the built-in TNC and it's up and running. Or put the Jotto Desk in the truck, connect the D700, GPS and PCS phone to the Mac, then I have a real map display of both APRS users, weather radar, and NWS weather alers while I'm out spotting. All these wonderfull facilities and we haven't hard any real area wide severe weather since 2003 (which is good but kind of bummer since I don't get to play with the toys). The Carrollton/Coppell area hasn't had a real net in the last two years (we've started up a couple, but by the time the weather actually arrives it's a bust).

Well I'll keep my fingers crossed for some really good bad weather [LOL]

I went along with some stormchasers once in college... it was fun.

The morse isn't that bad, BTW. I did 13wpm for my General back before they started wussing out on the requirement. 'course today I don't even remember the whole alphabet frown
