The M8000 I just bought used won't switch to free spool... is there a reason this would happen, and if it's messed up, can it be fixed?

USED Something I would not buy used is a winch! No way to test it unless it is still on another vehicle? Maybe the brake is fried and the motor is smoked? Maybe it just rusted up and won't free wheel?

Are you saying that you cannot turn the handle to "spooling" position? Or the handle is in spooling position, but the drum is not turning as you try to pull the line out? confused

Hey austinbrtndr,

The free-spool is a fairly simple mechanical system. If you're inclined to do so, I'd check to see if the mechanism (clutch lever, sliding ring gear) is actuating correctly. If you need a parts diagram for reference just let me know and I'll post it. Good luck man!!

Thanks Miikkaa, I might need that... the winch works fine in normal mode... it will spool in and out just fine with the control... I just can't switch the handle to free spool mode... I just got word from the previous owner that sometimes the handle freezes up after not being used for long periods of time and needs to be tapped with a hammer, but after that it works fine (until not used for another long period)... as for buying used, it was already connected to the bumper I was buying, and I trust the guy I bought it from (XOC member)...

Just ran outside and tried it... just a little tap tap with the mini hammer and it freed right up... works like a charm now... Thank guys... [ThumbsUp]
