Well, George and I did this trail during the Labor Day weekend (I think it was), but I'd like to visit there once more before the season is over. It just was really nice place to visit, and I'd like to share with anyone who is willing to drive out, and hike a little (at the end). smile And, I plan this trip 2 weekends after Xterra Championship because this trail is located above 7,500 ft... The trip has to take place before the bad weather.

Trail: Eagle Peak Trail
Duration: 1 Day
Difficulty: Moderate
Date: Oct 9, 2004 (Sat).
Location: Northeast of Sonora, Pinecrest and Strawberry off of Hwy 108

Trail Condition: It does require 4Lo for some places & about 20 degrees off camber at a couple places.
Vehicles: Any SUV... You can join even if you drive 2wd Xterra. We'll help you get up, so don't worry. smile

If you're looking for a trail run that is very challenging, this run is not it for you. If you want to put it into 4Hi/4Lo, enjoy a stress-free, great scenic trail, this is it. Both George and I have 32" tires and susp. lift, and we had a great time running this trail.

Trip Details:
Meeting Place: McDonald's at Santa Rita Exit off of I-580 in Pleasanton @ 7 am.
Lunch & Snack Shopping: Park N Save in Sonora @ 9:30 - 10:00 am
Trail head: 11:00 am
Quote:
Trail Details from Guide to Northern California Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails
Difficulty: Moderate. Most of the trail is easy but there are a few steep, rock hills to climb. Suitable for all high-clearance SUVs w/ 4wd.

According to Mapquest, Sacramento to Sonora is about 95 miles, or a bit shy of a 2.5 hour drive. Most of us from the bay area drive farther than that, but only you can be the judge of whether 5 hours round trip on the highway is tolerable.

Yeah I already ran the mapquest and got 114 miles to Pinecrest.....I was hoping someone who had run this before could comment on the time it takes to run the trail? Then I can get a good read on how long I can expect to be out that day.

Thanks

George and I did this trail in 1 day... From the Bay area, it's kinda long drive, but it didn't feel like extremely long. [Freak] From Sac, it shouldn't be too bad at all unless you stay up all nigth and then attempt to join the run. :p

Yup we did it in one day.... we left milpitas around 9am, arrived at the trail around 12nn and looked for a spot for lunch and had it by 12:30 noon.
we reached the dead end around 3:15/30pm hiked a couple of minutes to the peak.....enjoyed the scenery, then went down around 4:20/30.
The trip didn't seem to be that long. wink
Arrived home around 10:30 pm.

Well, there seems to be a campground nearby, but... I'm planning to set up another trip in either late October or early November. The difficulty of the trail is going to depend upon how many people actually respond to the other thread that Huey started out for me...

Is this the same trail as the Pinecrest Peak Trail in the Backcountry Adventures book? Reason I ask is I see Eagle Peak in the write up for that trail as well? Just curious......cause I have both books you have been talking about

Don't know... I didn't use the Backcountry Adventure book to plan this trip. I'll check once I get home tonight...

Akio,
I am definitely interested, but I have a prior commitment. I haven't been out wheeling all summer and I am really anxious to get out, but I just can't make it on the 9th. I'll try to make it the next time. frown

Thanks for the invitation on the AC board.

Ted

No, it is not. They are very closely located, though. The description of the trail from Backcountry book sounds good, too... I think the view is better from Eagle Peak @ 9,370 ft than Pinecrest Peak @ 8,441 ft. though. laugh

Sorry Akio.....got your email but I have been out of town on Vacation and just got back. October 9th actually works well for me. October 23 could work as well? But 9th gets my vote for best day

Vacation? Nice... smile

Eagle Peak Run is still taking place on the 9th as long as the weather permits. Just the time to meet is shifted early by 1 hour.
