Ok, I know of Nissans reputation and what I've seen on older trucks, but for those of you who have owned them for a while, how many miles do you have on your X. What major failures(eng, trans, diff...)? MV

Mine has 80K and has left me stranded once. The fuel sending unit failed, other than that it's been great. Knock on wood "knock, knock, knock"

You'll wish you hadn't asked when I get done!
85K miles...
2 (maybe 3; not sure yet) cracked manifolds 1 dead transmission 1 dead ABS sensor 1 rattling distributor
I try not to let it bother me too much though; afterall, I could have bought a FORD! Seriously; I love the truck and don't have any desire to get rid of it and I would buy another one in a heartbeat.

The 1st to 2nd gear synchro baulk ring came apart and the pieces of it seem to have taken out a few other things. I'm still driving it, but the transmission could lock me in or out of a gear at any time and it is definately not operating normally. Getting another transmission from a '99 Frontier put in next week. For those interested, my plan is to keep the old transmission and rebuild it so I will hopefully have some pictures of what all went wrong internally.

Hit 60K this week. No build-related problems of any kind. I've replaced tires, shocks, battery, and the windshield after getting hit with a rock. Dealer replaced the plugs at the 60K tune up, but engine was running fine.

We've only had our X for about 8 weeks (Love it)but I've been a Nissan guy for years. Our other truck is a '93 hardbody pickup, we traded a Mercury Villager van to get the X (All Nissan drivetrain which is why we bought it in the first place), and we'd owned an '87 pathfinder and a '95 hardbody pickup but sold both to get out of car payments when kids came along. My first Nissan was actually a Datsun pickup (more than 20 years ago by now) although I don't recall the year anymore.
I've always had great luck with the import vehicles we've owned but especially so with the Nissans. Never had a major mechanical failure with any of them. In fact, rarely had a problem of any sort actually. Nissan makes a great product.
I've owned the others too, but I always come back to Nissan. Our X is almost exactly the same color as my first car, which was a '65 Imapla SS. I rebuilt most of that car including body, paint, and interior. Painted it '77 Corvette Yellow. That big car really wore the color well and every time I see my Yellow X I'm reminded of that first car.
The X has brought me full circle - It's brought me back to Nissan but in a way that reminds me of my first car. Nice.

I've got 17k on mine and it's been in for pilot bushing, throw out bearing, front hubs, and other things they didn't replace (windows, mileage, etc.). I'm also going in again today to finally get the PCV valve and vacuum hose assembly replaced since it was leaking oil from the hose on top of the intake manifold. Anyway, back to that tranny, mine whines terribly when cold and sometimes locks me out of gears...

39,000 miles and not one thing.
Unless you count the dead battery last year. Which I don't count cuz 3 years is the limit on batteries in the desert.

That's a good plan, but Nissan has treated me like shit from the day I drove off the lot. I won't go back to them. I think it sucks that the truck has a lot of problems, but if they agreed to fix things or at least try to work with me on problems they don't understand and keep treating my like a valued customer thing would probably be a lot different. I would certainly be singing a different tune.

I didn't realize it before, but the wrecking yard has a core charge if I want to keep the transmission. I will probably let them have it so I don't have to spend more money, but I sure would like a look inside! I will make a decision probably Monday on keeping it or not. Just so curious! Hopefully the '99 Frontier transmission I bought is OK. Supposedly it has 24K miles on it so it should be, but you never know. The 2000 transmission they had was only $50 more but had more miles on it.

108,000 miles. Two cracked manifolds Fuel Sending Unit Mass Airflow and two O2 sensors ... and too many trips to the dealer for a rough idle problem that still isn't solved. Nothing huge, it's intermittent, and I've complained so much for so long that there's no charge for the hocus-pocus "engine flush" that cures it. I think the ECU has been batty since I had the JWT pop charger in and took on a little water in-cabin at about 25K. I'm keeping the X for as long as it runs - mostly because I don't know how successful I'd be selling it with all the mods and trail induced character. Anyway, it's not going to be the daily driver much longer - I put down a deposit on a VW R32 the other day. Vroom, vroom - back to the realm of possible speeding tickets.

Having to replace a Mass Airflow Sensor and two O2 sensors is not a reliability issue with the vehicle if you are running a (lame JWT) after market intake, and sucking water through it. If you modify parts of the vehicle, repliability is no longer Nissan's concern. Your comment is justified if I was trying to pull a fast one on my dealer - I'm not. They know what happened. I paid for the work to solve this problem and it wasn't done successfully. True, it's not a reliability issue - my apologies. The JWT Pop Charger was definitely lame - I put the stock airbox back in early '00.

46,000 miles, one leaf spring and a circuit board in the dash that controls all the gauges. I'll find out later this summer whether I have a cracked manifold.

42,000 miles and not a problem, except a little rust I have happening on the hatch. Should this thing be rusting when its only two years old?

I don't know why some people have to talk bad about FORD, sure they aren't nissans but until the Titan comes out, and probably after it does too, the only full size truck i'd buy would be an f-series. A mechanic in my area says that GM Z-71's keep him in business.

GM trucks will keep a mechanic in business, once they hit 225,000miles, the Fords kept my paychecks plump starting at 65,000miles. But the trucks were never as bad as the cars, Escort, Tempo, Taurus(and their mercury counterparts), now those were job security! MV

59,000 miles and so far:
Replaced drivers side catalytic converter
Exhaust manifold
Passenger side cylinder head was replaced due to it developing small pin holes
Put new tires on it last week (I am SO glad to be done with those shi**y General Grabbers)
Need to get windshield replaced due to it cracking 2 winters ago, due to heat from defrost hittng the cold glass and causing it to crack
Everything except for the tires and windshield were covered under warrenty. I have been pretty happy with my X, but won't be getting another one. I need a full-size pick-up, and will be replacing the X with that.
