You can just save this [Finger] to your hard drive, then edit the properties of the Favorite and give it that icon...

Just a tip Graham, when you save a continuous tone image, like a screen shot, use GIF compression, it will prevent it from looking like shit like your sample there laugh

JPEG is for photographic images only, no exceptions. PNG is for people who think it's cool to use a useless file format that is slowly dying.

If you think PNG is useless you know nothing (or very little) about it.

JPEGs are lossy, GIFs look like ass (256 colors?) and are patented. PNG is perfect.

Now if only more apps supported the alpha layer...

Uh-oh, rabid OS geek...

The patent on GIF expires, Unisys isn't going to renew and guess what - critical mass wins. PNG is doomed.

VHS vs Beta anyone?

And besides, GIF's don't have to be ugly or restricted to 256 colors. I've seen pleanty of untalented people produce horrible looking PNG graphics. It's not the format that necessarily sucks but the monkey behind the keyboard [Freak]

But hey, why use logic - extremism is so much more fun! [Sleep]

JPEGs, PNGs and GIFs all look great when used in the proper situation. The problem is when an individual uses a JPEG when he should've used a GIF and vice versa.

PNGs are totally useless in the web world. The support for this format is lacking and certain browsers do not support it at all. But, PNGs are great to import into Flash/Director when one needs an alpha channel for tranparent backgrounds or drop shadows.

The Unisys patent expired 3 days ago on the 20th of June.

PNG does offer transparency, but that's it when it comes to real world usefulness (and even that is debatable).

GIF compresses smaller than PNG-8 (even though claims are made to the contrary) and allows animation.
JPEG compresses smaller than PNG-24.

Trust me, PNG is dead.

PNG is doomed? Maybe, but not because PNG is a bad/useless format. It just hasn't been picked up in the industry, why, I have no idea.

I agree, not all GIFs are ugly, I for one used them all the time back in the day before everyone had 16bit color. Though I'm yet to see how you can use more than 255 colors.

I never said everything sucks BUT PNG.

Exactly, simply because browsers do not support it well. If browsers could use it, a PNG would be very neat to use as a web developer, especially with the alpha layer.

PNG's are very useful if you use them for what they are intended for. That being vector-based graphics. For most uses, the raster-based (bitmapped) compression methods are more useful, but if you want graphics that are truely scaleable, and with editable elements PNG is the way to go. I use PNG for my "library" images in Fireworks, then export to gid or jpg as appropriate to use on the final page. IMO, PNG is a much better replacement for GIF's (incidently, the patent expired a few days ago), but not all browsers support them correctly. PNG is a poor substitute for JPG, period.

Wait, PNG is not vector, unless there's more to it than I know.

I think you are refering to SVGs. Scalable Vector Graphics. Another awesome format that will never be utilized by the web community.

I stand corrected. I think I'm confusing them with SVG. Anyhow, Fireworks does save in PNG format by default, and saves all vector paths as such. I dunno. *shrug*

I have no problem viewing PNG's in IE or Mozilla, but why should I be forced to download a larger file than I have to for no reason other than you're a rebel ?

GIF and JPEG offer everything I need, why use something else just because the open source crowd thinks it's cool ?
