Apparently, the pope is trying to pass (which I don't think the term is correct, because the pope is infalliable, meaning god talks through him, so what he says goes, without question) a thing that puts Mary at the same level as Jesus, meaning you can pray to either one, meaning you can ask/do whatever of Mary as done with Jesus.

Pope John Paul II may have written an epistle stating the benefits of praying to Mary and perhaps commentary on her purity. From the New Testament and in Catholic doctrine, she and Jesus are the only human beings conceived without original sin. In that sense, they are the same. But really, you can pray to whomever you want. As a Catholic, I don't dial up deep to JC for the big stuff and keep St. Ignatius on the back burner for help with bunions.

As a former Catholic, no one was able to show me that so I came to realize that she was a sinner, just like the rest of us. Her importance was that God chose here and all, but she was still a sinner.

(Though I guess you could argue that Adam and Eve were, too - as there was no original sin until they ate the apple).

It is theorized that original sin is passed on by the father. JC's father being the Master of the Universe freed Jesus from original sin as well. This site discusses the finer points: http://www.carm.org/questions/Jesus_original_sin.htm And this touches on what BobbyX mentioned: http://www.blessed-virgin-mary.net/ Damn, all these religious sites are crowding out the porn url's in my browser's drop down menu.

[/b]Mary was born without sin. From ewtn.com (the Catholic cable channel): "Mary, 'full of grace,' has been recognized by the Church as "all holy and free from every stain of sin,' 'enriched from the first instant of her conception with the splendour of an entirely unique holiness' (Lumen gentium, n. 56).

Interesting. So, what was the point in Jesus being baptized? To lead by example, I'm guessing?
