In case it has not been posted before. Make sure to remove the gear basket when you wash your X, as the water underneath can not be reached with towels while it is in place.

Say the following outloud:
EYE M WE TODD DID. EYE M SOFA KING WE TODD DID.
Sorry. I couldn't resist. I took off my basket the first time I washed my X and never put it back on. Let us all unite by taking off our baskets and step rails and throwing them away. Oh my G-d. It's 1:00 in the morning!

But some people do need reminding. For example, the person who detailed my X at the dealership. Washed and waxed it, made it shine...unless you looked under the gear basket.

I have yet to put the gear basket to good use while city driving. But I do put it back on during my outdoor trips to the boondocks.

I wash many X's daily, and until I owned one, I never really thought about, which is why I posted it, and now I recommend it to all my customers.

That's actually a good point but you know I just couldn't resist posting a wise crack. It's one of those things that's really obvious but easy to forget nonetheless. Cheers.

Planning to do the detail thing on the X this weekend...However, I can't seem to get the basket off...Will I have to use pliers on the nuts to get them to turn? ------------------

Nah, there's a tool in the back of your X under the carpet made for getting those screws loose. I think it's a torxdriver? Anyway, just use that to loosen it up - it should be pretty obvious how it works once you see the tool. ------------------ Mindie - AIM: mindiejoynt 2001 Silver Ice, 4x4 Auto SE

Insert a screwdriver into the loop and turn counter-clockwise. This will help you avoid the marring of the plastic that could be caused by the pliers. ------------------ :wq! Thanks! I'm gonna try that today. I've seen a few X's where people simply leave the gearbaskets off. Doesn't look too bad...Any comments? ------------------

I stupidly screwed one of my roof basket screws too tight and heard a snap. I' sure I stripped either the screw or the hole that the screw goes into. If it's the hole am I pretty much out of options? I'll test one of the other screws to see if it's the screw or not, but I'm pretty sure it might be the hole.

One small head up, anyone that has the basket net, and the bigger hook screws that go with it. Watch how tight you put them in, especially the ones that go into the deflector. If over tightened, you actually end up pulling the screw out of the plastic hook. I simple small washer between the hook and the deflector stops this from happening. ------------------ member of http://www.soxc.org http://www.geocities.com/x_canuk

I use the basket when I need it, otherwise it sits in my garage.

Call me lone wolf, but I like the gearbasket.I learned after the wash to pull it off but I'd rather keep it on for apperance sake. The question I have is why do some folks take off the basket and the deflector when they don't have a moon roof? I think the X looks naked without that stuff.

I took my basket off, put 4 hooks on my ceiling in my garage, and put the basket on the hooks. This way it stays out of the way and looks cool hanging above my X.

A while back, someone mentioned that the gear basket can be used as a cargo organizer in the back of the X. OK, so it's far from perfect, but might work in a pinch. dave and Xtoy - and it's 'free' ------------------

I have the XE so the basket stays in and I like the looks of the X with the basket in place. ------------------ There is a fine line between "addiction" and obsession" www.gpxo.org

I cast my vote for - keeping it in place ...
I do take it off when I wash ... I put a small O-ring on each screw and a bit of LaBelle grease on the threads and then screw them back in ... the O-rings are permanent ...
I put the grease on each time before I turn the hose on ... keeps water out of the rack tubes ...

That was me. It is far from perfect, but the basket really is decent for keeping(whisper) groceries from rolling around too much. I also have my tools in there blocked off with my mini-tote box. If you do use the basket in the back, it's most easily accessible with the "arms" pointing to the front of the truck. Be sure to put a blanket between the arms and the rear seat, or you will start to get indentations on the back of the seat. ------------------ Dan. Exploring the Rockies

Hey dont be so down on the gear basket for us XE owners that dont have moonroofs it looks good on. I grease the screws to avoid them rusting and take off the basket to wash the truck. Not only that I actually take the time to armor all the entire basket.
