Trying to get to the top

Man, getting the top of the X washed and waxed is a real PITA. Standing on the step rails helps but you have to hang on with one hand and work with the other, almost fell on my ass doing that yesterday. Has anyone found a good way to comfortably accomplish this task? I guess a step ladder would help, but I'm concerned about it crashing in to the side of the X.
Thanks

i got a little 1 step ladder thing from target for $11. go to home depot and get some pipe insulation to wrap around the top part of it to protect the X.

Thanks I have a heavy duty ladder that is very sturdy and allows you to stand wide with both feet apart at the top. It has a tray that is very strong and I put my supplies on that. My driveway is on a hill, and I didn't get any slippage or unsteadiness. I hold on to the tubular rails for leverage when I need it. (The good thing about being on a hill is the water flows off the roof of the car pretty easiy.) The only pain is you have to move the ladder to the four sides of the truck.

you could scaffold around it and dangle yourself upsidedown above the xterra and clean it that way...

Can we see a pic of your set up LUV2?
I have some scaffolding around and think that just might work.
I open the doors and stand right on the step rails... (not sliders yet) and that seems to work fine (more standing room with the doors open). A little water/soap runs into the door jam but... usually there is a little spray / dirt in there that I just was out. If you are worried about the possibility of staining your seats... through a towel over them...
To be 100% honest with you.. I do not remember holding on with the other hand... But then again, I don't use two sponges very often, so the other hand is free mostly... I will pay more attention next time I wash it.

Just stand on the tire, you get higher up than the rails and have great reach.

Took my rails off, haven't gotten sliders yet... I gotta stand on the back tire and reach across, holding on with one hand... Yeah, it kinda sucks, hehe. Sure gets looks from people passing by though... "Dumb ass raised his truck so much he can't even wash it now!" If I *need* to get to a spot near the front, I'll just open the door and stand on the ledge, heh.

Great suggestions guys... I was just thinking, what if I get a piece of 3/4" Plywood just big enough to kneel on, carpet it and then lay it on the top rails. Climb up my 6' step ladder and get on top of the X? Hmmm... anyone ever tried that? Not for washing, but for waxing.

Those "tire steps" really are kinda retarded... Why just stand on top of the tire?! Okay, so maybe not when the tire is covered in goo and mud - but then, if you put the tire step on, it will be too, and then you'll have to figure out where to toss the thing in the truck.

I just climb on top and leave most of my weight on the rack. Works ok for me.

For washing I use a cotton string mop, standing on the rear bumper for the rack area and on the sides for the basket area, then stand on the rear bumper to rinse. For waxing I use a step ladder.

I stand on the rear wheel. You can reach the rear 2/3 of the roof from there. Helps some.

I go out the bedroom window and lower myself in a harness.

Just ask Iro to come over and wash the roof for you. The only catch is he'll want to pose next to it and post a picture here.
