Well i picked up my first X on Dec 28th, and then promptly put 400 miles on it that day. Did a little bit off roading, nothing major. Tomorrow it goes in for it's first visit to the service dept. I have the rust spots in the back, which my dealer said wouldn't be a problem to fix!!! My gas gauge also doesn't go all the way to the full. It will only fill to the 3/4 line and stay there forever. oh well, i can deal with that, i love the X. I also made my first (minor) modifications, i put the stubby attenna on and i bought the rubber mats.

Some others (myself included) have had the same problem w/ the fuel gauge. I have had mine since December 1, 2000 and have never seen my gauge go above 3/4 tank. I plan on telling the dealer about this in about a month when it goes in for it's first oil change. Ask your dealer/ service place to check out the fuel gauge problem. It is a known problem, but I have yet to hear what causes it. Bring in some of the posts from the XOC. They are in the "general" forum called "fuel gauge" and one with the same name in the "dealer svc. & repair" forum. Print them and bring them to the dealer. Please let US know if you find anything out. I have also heard people on XOC talk about a warning light when you are low on gas. I have been fairly low on gas a few times, but have never seen this warning light...this might be a symptom of the gauge problem. Like I said, I plan on having mine checked out in about a month or two, but I would appreciate to know what the problem is sooner so I can go to the dealer with a little knowledge of what the problem is. Thanks and congrats on the new X!!!

As mentioned, there are more threads about this problem so check those out. But I will tell you that getting the fuel gauge fixed is a simple process. Apparently the sending unit in the tank isn't adjusted properly on some X's. They adjusted mine while I waited, so it can't be too major. Oh, I made the mistake of filling up the tank when I took it in to show the guy. I figured it would be easier to show him that way, but he told me that to adjust the sending unit, the tech needs to get in the tank. So he told me to bring it back when it was at a half tank or less.

I've found that the Low-Fuel warning light comes on with about 4 gallons left in the tank. Not too bad, since I'll have almost 70 miles left. More than enough to get to the *cheaper* gas station.

What would you say is the average amount of miles you get with a full tank? My low fuel warning light comes on early too, but I haven't been brave enought to call it's bluff.

Furthest I've pushed it is about 300 miles, which took about 17 gal to refill.

Unfortunately, my fuel gauge problem has not been so easily fixed. I've been tag-teaming between two dealers both of whom have failed to fix the problem.

I picked up my car on 12/2/00 and since then my car has been in the shop a total of 7 days. I brought it in today and it looks like at least another 3 days (this time Nissan sent them the wrong parts!). Needless to say, I am not a happy camper...

I posted the 2nd thread on this posting...I have never gotten more than 230 miles out of a tank. As mentioned in the thread above, I have never seen the "low fuel warning light" either so I probably had some mileage left...although my needle pointed very close to "E". This might have to do w/ my gauge issue.

I filled mine up one time and it took 18.6 gallons. That was cutting it close in my book. My light came on the day before. I think I drove about 60 miles thay day. So that seems to be good.

When my light comes on it really means it! I have less than 2 gallons when it comes on.

The best mileage I have ever gotten, 21.2 MPG, was traveling on the highway under cruise control, flat roads and not going over 65MPH.

Ouch! Sorry to hear that. I would definitely blame that on the dealer. When I took mine in he told me that they would try and adjust it and if that didn't work they would replace the sending unit. He said it would only take a day even if they did have to get a new sending unit. Fortunately for me they were able to adjust it, but regardless they shouldn't be having that much trouble with yours.

Good to see I'm not the only one with fuel guage problems. However, mine seems a bit different. When I fill up, my guage goes to 3/4, but then after 20-30 miles of driving, it goes to Full. It's been consistently doing this since I bought it last May!

That's how mine is, but after about 10 miles of driving it goes to full.

I had the gas gauge problem, too. I got my 2001 XTerra SE end of December. The gauge never went past 3/4 full. After a few fillups, the gauge was stuck on full. I took it into the dealer to get it fixed (under warranty of course) and they said my "plunger was hung up on something inside the tank??" Anyway, they rerouted it and it's working fine, now.

I've still been too lazy to take my X in for this. Mine's never even gone as high as 3/4 except for one day when I was offroading - it went up above 3/4 for about 2 minutes, then back to its stuck position. I'll be sure to mention the whole sending unit thing when I do get in to the dealer. Also, my gas light doesn't seem to be affected by my stuck needle - it still comes on when I've got about 3-4 gallons left or at about 240-260 miles. If anyone else has any different solutions, I'd be interested in hearing about them...
