well about a week ago now my xterra was rear ended while i was stopped to make a left turn across traffic. the truck (dodge 2500) was going between 60 and 70mph. since my wheels were turned to the left my truck went that way right into oncoming traffic. i clipped a car and then went threw the ditch and was stopped by a telephone pole guide line. myself and my passenger were thrown forward so hard that the brackets mounting the seats down sheared clean off. in the end we were all safe, a bit achy for a few days, but thats all. the other guy is still in the ICU. so, feel safe in your xterra and i know what ill be replacing this one with laugh

I (and my family), lived through a head-on in an '01. Glad to see you made it out too, and even considering getting another X. Good luck smile

LOOK! - The steprails survived without a scratch!

I still remember my instructor when I was 16 yrs old remind me that in that situation, my wheels should be straight - not turned. To this day, I still remember that advise and I find that I'm in the habit of keeping them straight until the moment that I actually step on the gas and am ready to move.

Bottom Line though - Glad you walked away from that one!

Wow...glad you're ok. And glad the X's gas tank isn't right there under the rear bumper like a lot of Jeep Cherokees have it.

A recent fatal accident here resulted from the same situation. One vehicle rear-ended another, and the driver had her wheel turned left in preparation for a left turn. As you were, she was knocked into oncoming traffic. A motorcycle going the opposite direction struck her vehicle and the rider was killed.

Good reminder for everyone...steer straight until you actually start the turn.

Glad you're OK.

ONE MORE EXAMPLE of why adding a 3rd-row seat to an X is a BAD IDEA!

Glad you're ok, good luck shopping for the new X. For everyone that has this misconception of keeping your wheels straight in case of an accident, it doesn't usually help. I've done several investigations and seen training footage where it made no difference.
