I'll try and find a pic, but what I did was this.
When you get the bsket extension piece, you get a bar that goes across the basket with it. This is for mounting accessories across the basket because it might otherwise be too long. Order an extra bar and bolt your bike trays, wheel mounts, surf pads, etc. to the two bars. Then you have an assembly that holds all of your stuff on the Yak basket, but only takes the removal of four allen bolts to pull the whole thing off as a unit so you can use the basket by itself.
Are you going to the mod day in Redondo Beach at Bears' place? If so, I can put the rack back on so you can see it up close for yourself if you want.
Edit -- found some old pics from the way back. Not close ups, but if you look close they might give you an idea. I angled the wheel mounts back so that the skewers cleared the rear derailleur on the driver's side.
