If you haven't already bought, don't even THINK about getting a 2WD.

You'll get into this shiat. Trust me.

I got the 4x4 for the snow. I'll be up at 5am after a snowfall and drive to Stowe to get the first chairlift up. At that time the of day the local plows are still trying to get all the snow off the roads.

Honestly I think Nissan should discontinue the 2wd Xterra, it just does not make sense. There are so many better vehicles out there if you dont need 4x4, that getter better fuel milage anyways. A 2wd only leads to image problems for Nissan, disgruntled customers when they realize what they could have had for a few dollars extra and the impossible re-sale of a 2wd off-road vehicle.

When you step up to mostly people movers like the Pathfinder and Armada, a 2wd MIGHT make more sense.

I originally bought a 4x2 in 2003 because I liked the looks. I figured some mild off-roading wouldn't hurt - and it didn't. Got a sweet deal on it, it was my favorite color (Aztec Red) and people loved it. I modded it some (tires, mild front-end lift, lights), but avoided the more hardcore mods (full lift, bumper, sliders, etc.) because I really didn't feel that they made sense and would be just more bling.

That said, when my daughter totalled my 4x2 last December, there was no question what the replacement would be - my current 4x4. I haven't regretted the switch, even though I've probably only racked up maybe 100 miles of true off-road action in the last 9 months.

Yes, I now get about 17.5 mpg instead of 18.5 mpg around town, and about 17.5 mpg (talk about consistency) instead of almost 20 mpg on the highway, but what the heck.

When it was time to trade my wife's van in on a new vehicle, our first (and only) stop was the local Nissan dealer, where we purchased her 4x2 Xterra. She is the last person in the world that needs 4x4.

However, I don't think there is a better value for the money than the Xterra if you want a mid-size SUV. Therefore, in examples such as this, the 4x2 makes perfect sense. I don't think I could've found another new SUV for under $20k (rebates and incentives) aside from maybe Kia or Hyundai.

Most of the same reasons as the other 4 wheel drive owners have mentioned. 4 wheel drive is one of those things that you may never use, but it's nice to have. I would rarely use 4 wheel drive in AZ, but when you have it you find ways to use it. If you go offroad, like me, 4 wheel drive is the only way to go. It's nice when there's snow on the ground and the roads are bad, that you can still make it out if you need to and you have the opportunity to go skiing or enjoy the snow, when most people can't even leave their driveways. Also if you tow a boat it can be a lifesaver. Some boat ramps are so steep and slippery that a 2 wheel drive might not even be able to pull back up the boat ramp after dropping the boat in the water (I know a friend who "floated" his 2 week old, new GMC Jimmy doing just that). 4 wheel drive is a bit of an investment since it costs a couple grand more than a 2 wheel drive, but with added capability, safety, and better resale value, it's worth it.

4X4 Main reason is to get around in snow, and very inclement weather  .

Especially the ramps where your trailer has to be ropped off the end of the ramp because the water level is low, or the ramps that aren't paved at all! Sometimes it's not just the 4WD either; you need the low range.

I bought a 4x4 for:

1) offroading;
2) the snow in Central NY.

I bought it because I am always prepared. I don't want to be someplace and say "damn, wish I had 4wd". This is actually my first 4wd and have found myself saying the above statement more than once through the years. I figured it was time to do something about it.

I went with the off-road model because of the locker. I had not had any plans of doing serious off-roading, but now that I have found this place, my plans for me new X has changed and I am REALLY glad I did get the Off-Road package.

Funny enough, when I was about to buy I was going back and forth - and it was actually my girlfriend who said "Look, is there a chance that you'll look back later and wish that you'd gotten it? Yes? Well then get it!!!".

She cool cool

Then 2 years ago I joined the SWXC and it turned into a redneck offroad mod-fest wink

Nothing worse than getting stuck in 2 feet of snow and not being able to move. The winters here in NY seem to be getting worse and worse.

This is why I got 4x4 and a vehicle with ABLS and VDC.

I bought it when living in Upstate NY. They only had 4x4s on the lot (it was while they were trying to get rid of the 2000s and bring in the 2001s). It's nice to be able to drive in the winter regardless of conditions and on poorly kept dirt roads in the summer.

4x4

1. i live in the sticks now, so i need it in case of snow
2. i do occasionally offroad
3. i'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
4. if i'd wanted a 4x2, i would have bought a car.

I went 4x4 for a few reasons.

1) I live in a very hilly area and need it in the winter.
2) I pull a utility trailer to the dump, which can be pretty messy.
3) I use 4WL it when pulling the trailered boat out of the water.
4) I occasionally off-road.
5) I don't want to get stuck anywhere.
6) Buying a 4x2 truck is like buying a 4 cylinder Corvette.

4x2 because I don't do any hard off-roading. Not much of that in flat Louisiana. $2,000 is a lot to pay for something you'll never use.

That is pretty ironic if you ask me.

I have to drive out to the boonies when I go plinking!

Lots of soft sugar sand in FL. With careful driving, you can manage 2WD most of the time... but not always.

Yep, that option did cost more at the time of purchase. However, if you look at older models in the Kelly Blue Book (or others), you'll find the 4x4 is worth about that amount more than the equivalent 4x2 of that year. 4x4s are easier to sell later too. Can't add 4x4 later if you change your mind.

I bought the 4x4 because I wanted to carry up to 4 people with food, gear and water on alluvial fans (Death Valley), logging roads, jeep trails and/or deep snow. In other words, heavy loads on loose or uneven surfaces.
