I need to upgrade tires on my 01 X. I want BFG's but at $170 per tire I'm wondering if it's worth it. I saw the Yokohama Geolandar AT+ and was wondering if anyone knows how they compare(if they do)to the BFG's. I do know at 114 per tire it's a big difference.
Something like $224.00. Did the popularity of the BFG's drive the price up or what?

How about "Futura"? http://www.pepboys.com/tires/peptires/truck/

I just bought Enforcer @ $95/tire (31/10.50R15).

Consider the Dunlop Radial Rover R/T as well, pretty decent all-around tire if you ask me.

I've got 'em, I love 'em. I paid <100 per tire for 31x10.5x15, though, so check around on price. Or do you have the 16 inch rims?

From another thread....

Maybe the BFG can be had for less than $170 (assuming you're after a 31 inch tire)

For that big of a price difference I would easily take the Geolander AT+'s that I know are also great tires. From what I have heard/seen there're very solid off-road, comfortable/quite on road, and offer great overall traction. Review is at: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/yokohama/yo_geolandar_at_plus.jsp

The super diggers they used to make where awesome & I'm using one for my spare now. BFG has some agreement where they keep the price fixed at a certain level on the KO AT+ so that vendors don't price compete or something.

Shame that 16" tires are so much more expense than 15", you might what to consider getting some inexpensive 15" wheels like the black alloy American Racing 767's for ~ $40 and using/beating them while off-roading.

Thanks for all your help guys....I apreciate
it. I'm gonna shop around a little more, as well as take a look at the Dunlop's and Futura's.

Toolbox,
The wheel idea is one I have not thought of.
It would definately be the best of both worlds.
The problem though is storage for the wheels and tires I'm not using at the time....if I can figure that out it might be worth a shot.

I used to have a set of 31-1050-15 Yokohama Geolandar AT's on my Pathfinder. They worked pretty good, both on and off-road. The tread pattern is agressive, and the square shoulders are a great traction-aid, especially at lower tire pressures.

The biggest downside of those tires is that the tread compound is softer, so the tires won't last as long.

Also, I can't believe you're getting quotes of $114 per tire! Does that include mounting, balancing, tax, etc. or is it the raw price per tire? I paid only $90 per tire at a tire store that, unfortunately for you, is a northern-cal-only franchise. You should be able to get a better price.

XPLORx4,

114.00 is what they quoted me. It sounds like
I need to find someplace else to look. I'm gonna call back and ask for a better price too. Thanks for the input!

I bought my tires for $90 at wheel works. I love them. I think they look more aggressive than the BFG's

That seems pretty steep for AT/KO's. Check out www.etires.com. They have 31x10.50x15 AT/KO's for $112.99 ea. They offer free shipping. The only other expense you might have is mounting/balancing. If you don't know someone who can do it for you, Sam's is pretty cheap. I think its under $10 a tire.

arkman is pretty much correct in the pricing for the BFG AT/KOs for the 16 inch rims. $170 per tire is about the going rate for the 265/70/16 in my neck o the woods too. This price includes the tire, mounting, balancing, valve stems, tire disposal, etc. Pretty much every place I have looked has quoted me about the same price, give or take $10 or so per tire.

i'm sorry to test everyone's patience on this- i looked thru the 3 pages of topics and didn't find this info:

i have the alloy 15" wheels. i want the largest yokohama goelander a/t's that will fit WITHOUT modifying the truck (a snip of the mudgaurds is ok).

i didn't find yokohama to use inches, so if you guys know the closest metric #'s.

thanks and thanks!!

You could go with the 30x9.50R15.

neil,

I have 31x10.5x15 yoko AT+, and all I had to do was trim the mudflaps. Yoko does use inches as well, maybe the site you are looking at doesn't have it listed.

Brent listed a URL with a chart, and reco'd the 30x9.5, but if you are okay with a bit of trimming, the 31x10.5 will work as well.

Ive got a question for you . I also have P255/65R16 on my SE. I was looking at BFG (P255/70R16)A/Ts today. The guy said they would not work because they would change the speedometer. (Because of the 70) Is this true? confused

Take a look at the Pirelli Scorpion AT's. 99.00 each at discount tire. I have had then four 12k miles so far in all types of terrain. I am very happy with there performance. I will buy another set. The people here tend to favor the BFG but one extra side wall ply did not justify 135.00 a tire for me.

Don't know if you have these in you area, but I got Big O XT 31's, the are more aggressive than the TA KO's. I got them for $139/tire, the beauty of them is what comes with the package, this included mount and balance, a free alignment, free rotations every 3k, and most importantly they are the only aggressive tire I could find that actually had a milage warranty, 50k. I have been very impressed with the performance on and off road.

Shark, it's not really much in your case, they shouldn't give you any flak. A 255/65R16 is 29.052" in diameter. A 255/70R16 is 30.056" in diameter. That's 3.5% difference in diameter. The 255/65R16 has a circumference of 91.27", and the 255/70R16 has a circumference of 94.42" (still 3.5% difference of course) so therefore your speedo/odo would be off by 3.4%. At 60 MPH indicated, you would actually be doing 62.1 MPH.
Trust me, I know all about this stuff, I'm going to use it to help take the sting out of a speeding ticket if I'm lucky. I'm running 32" tires, so I'm about 5 MPH off at highway speeds (the faster you go, the bigger the discrepancy btw)

Hawkeye, Big-O isn't a nationwide store...
