#265204 - 28/11/03 03:11 PM 265/75/16s on stock X?
Anonymous

Have been looking all over the posts and in the search section and have not been able to find a definitive answer. Am about to switch from the stock 265/70/16 Grabbers my 2003cam with to a set of 265/75/16 Geolandar A/Ts. If I do this will I experience any rubbing or other fit problems at all??? Either in turning or crossing dips or bumps. My X is not lifted. Also, Will a 265/75/16 fit in the stock spare space??? Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated.

They should work just fine with your year X that you have.

I have an 02 with 265/75/16 MT/R's and all fit just fine, even have the spare in place with the Nissan tow hitch. I get some minor rubbing in the back right wheel well on the fuel tube cover - I'm not concerned about it.

I'm holding off on the new wheels till I can get a picture with 265/75/16 and mudflaps on a stock (lift wise) X. I would also prefer the BFG AT/KO's.

I might wait till next winter but I would like to get the odometer reading less then what I am actually traveling sooner. [Smoking]

Check out this thread,( BFG AT KO\'s/ mudflaps ) I have a pic of BFG AT KO's (265/75/16) with the rear mudflaps still on. The mudflaps look horrible if you leave them on with bigger tires.

Thanks for the link.

By chance does anyone know if this will fit on the spare tire w/a tow hitch? I am assuming the steel rim on the SE is 16in and not 15in which would leave the diameter about a little more than 1 full inch larger than the current BFG LT as the spare.

If you'd like to try and test-fit my 32x11.50 spare under your X you're welcome to swing by where I work in Towson sometime. If it fits, the 265/75-16 definitely will.

Nah, that's okay... I guess it will fit. Now I have to debate the mudflap issue. Do I leave them on with bigger tires or not or do I go with stock size tires. I like them on with the step rails on... which I plan on keeping because my wife is short and uses them. Also, because I use them to put bikes on the roof. It was however brought up that larger tires with mudflaps looks retarded. I'm at a toss up.

I don't bother with rear mudflaps, but I put my front ones on when I'm not 'wheeling. Doesn't look bad if you ask me.

I'd get the 265/75's if I were you, you'll probably regret it later if you don't. As far as the mudflaps go, leave them on and see what you think, you can always take them off later if you don't like the way they look.

I'm calling for quotes now... so far the cheapest I can get for 4 tires mounted and balanced for $700. That would be Sears. The highest quote I was given was $880.

I've got a few more places to call but this isn't looking too good... and here I thought I might get a spare to. [Uh Oh !]

Well, Sears did turn out to be the cheapest at $700 (without tax). They were on sale about $20 off each tire. The next best quote was $760 (without tax). Is it just me or are these prices a little steep for only 4 T/A KO's mounted and balanced?

I mean at best I am figuring I'll get $225 for my 4 stock BFG Long Trails w/8k on them.

I got my BFG AT's from Discount Tire about a month ago. They were $168 per tire mounted and balanced out the door - $672. I did have a coupon that brought the cost down to $640 out the door. I'm sure there are others who have been able to beat that price by shopping around more.

16" wheels do suck when it comes to buying tires, I would much rather have 32s and the extra money to spend on other mods.

Well, I just found out I can get them done on base for $600 out the door... that would be no tax as well! Looks like I will be hooking this up soon. I will probably leave the spare stock though just to save $150

That's a good price, or at least less then I paid. [Crybaby]

Anyway, as far as the spare goes you can probably pick up a used one and have it mounted for a lot less than the price of a new BFG. My dad gave me an old firestone from his super duty that I'm using for a spare. It also fits better than a new tire because its worn down nicely.

Realistically there is nothing wrong with keeping the stock LT on there. Yes, it will be a tad smaller but to drive on it for a week or two in the event of a flat should not be a problem.

The "R" just refers to the wheel size - 265 width, 75 aspect ratio, and 16" wheel. They are the same size.

Well, if you have limited slip I wouldn't put the smaller tire on the back - I think it would damage the limited slip ability of the rear diff. But you could always pull a tire off the front and throw it on the back.

LSD shouldn't matter for road use though in the event I get a flat. I wouldn't seek hard off roading trails while using the spare.

Also, I am noticing the website is charging me $50 to ship the tires to the base autoshop. I'll swing by there tomorrow in person and see what the deal is. The sites braggin about how you get free mount, lifetime balance, rotation, repair, stems, road hazard, ect. IF you order them from the site. So, I will see if I can't get the straight from the autoshop and still get all the lifetime crap.

But if you are going down a dry road with a different sized tire on each side of the rear axle, won't that engage the LSD to some extent? I'm not really sure, it just seems like I've heard other places that you aren't supposed to run differnt tires on the same axle if you have a LSD.

Brent would probably have a definative answer for this...

Not really, it's just like driving in a really, really big circle and not much different that putting on a worn spare when your other tires are all new. Probably wouldn't want to keep it on there for a long time, but it's fine for temporary use. When you think about it, the rear tires are almost never traveling at the same speed anyway. Obviously, there is a size difference at which point I would suggest a new spare, but for just one size differece or so I wouldn't worry about it.

Suspect2,

I left my stock spare on their, so don't know if they fit. I think it might though, but it will definately be tight. As far as the mudflaps versus steprails and deciding if you want to go with the stock size or a bigger size.

- Go with the 265/75/16's!!! You will regret it if you don't!

- Go ahead and keep the mudflaps on, you will probably want to take them off though. If you leave them on, you will have to trim a tiny bit off the front mudflaps.

- Leave your steprails on until you get sliders, unless you do any heavy offroading.

As far as where to go to get the tires, I haven't found or heard of a place beating Merchants price. I paid $550.00 out the door including free lifetime balancing (I can rotate on base for next to nothing, so didn't go with that). That price is for 265/75/16 BFG AT KO's. If you go to a Merchants and they won't give you that price, IM me and I will give you my phone number and I will talk to the manager at the Merchants where I went.

Seems everyone here is hot for the BFG's....I am considering Yokohama Geolandars in 265-75-16 size...they are much less expensive and I have heard that they are better in wet weather and packed snow....They do not have the rim protector though, and I am not sure which tire would be best off road....Have heard the BFG's wear better....Was also considering the Revos, but heard that they are not as capable off road, yet are flawless in wet weather...any opinions or insights??

Hey Suspect,

Let me call the Manager at the one near me. Yours should be able to match the price of another store! I will give him a call tomorrow.

I don't know how I managed to do it but neither one of the X's I have owned came with mudflaps.

Take a look at the Revo's. $116.00 from tirerack in 265/75/16. I've had them on for a few weeks, through mud and snow and love them!

I'm sure you can do a search and get more details, but in general here are my opinions about the tires:

Yokos - cheap, good snow and wet traction, they wear down pretty fast because of the soft compound.

Revos - tied with the BFG as the best AT tire you can get, these have the edge over the BFG's on the road - little bit less noise, little better wet and snow traction. You can get lighter rated versions for less than the BFG's, but the cost is basically the same if you get the D rated tires.

BFGs - compared to the Revos the BFG's aren't quite as good on road, but they have the edge in off-road performance, they are tougher (three ply sidewall, rim protector), and they wear like iron. They look more aggressive then the Revos, if that's important to you.

I went with the BFG's, but the Revos are an awesome choice too. Go to tirerack and you can look at a bunch of reviews for these tires.

I was just looking around and found an old post of mine.
This quote was from Dec 2003. Can you believe I still have the same tires on my X? I think the longest I've had a tire is maybe 15-20 months. I figure I'm near 35,000 miles or so. I put them on my 2002 and then onto my 2004. The Grabbers from the 2004 are new in my garage. (I saved my original '02 Grabbers JIC). I figure I'll be in the market for new Revo's prior to next winter.

My observation: Great on road and in snow, lacks a bit in serious mud.
