I'm considering upgrading my tires in the future and want to go wider vs. taller. I know the BFG AT KO's come in a 325/60R15 which is 12.9" wide and 30.5 in diameter. Is it possible to put these on a 15x7 or do I need to go with a new wheel, 15x9? I'm wanting to keep the stock wheels if possible, I just don't want to be unsafe. Most people are putting 31x10.5R15 on and I'm looking for an AT that is 30 or 31x11.5 or wider. Has anyone had any experience with wider tires on the stock wheels?

Well, the problem is...unless I'm entirely off my rocker and my X is an abberation...those tires won't fit in the rear wheelwells, the wheelwells are too narrow. I also believe those tires are too wide to fit on a 7" rim, I know of people running 12.5" wide tires but that's pretty much the limit on a 7" (and they have to be friends w/ the tire shop that does the mounting...)

Where are you measuring width of the tire? The tread width varies too much and has no bearing on rim size. Width should be measured side wall to side wall at the widest point. To answer your question, as you go wider you need wider rims. Here is some base information using the Bridgestone AT as the standard.

30x9.5R15 - 9.9" wide - 6.5 to 8.5 rim approved
31x10.5R15 - 10.9" wide - 7.0 to 9.0 rim approved
32x11.5R15 - 11.9" wide - 8.0 to 10.0 rim approved
33x12.5R15 - 13.0" wide - 8.5 to 11.0 rim approved

Hope this helps.

That's 11.50 width. Any wider and you'll likely have contact about where the arrow points.

I was wondering the same thing. I went off of BFG's stats, with the widest tire I could put on the stock 15x7 wheels being a 31x10.50x15. I have seen a lot of 32x11.50's on what appear to be stock wheels, though. What size wheels are folks using for their 32x11.50's? If they fit on the stock 15x7's, anyone wanna buy some 31x10.50's? (low miles!)

People are using the stock rims--I don't think anyone has 32's on non-stock, actually, as at that size you need the stock offset and backspacing to make them fit (unless you're running a lift.)

I have my Swampers on stock rims...32x11.50. The tire shop had a bit of a struggle to mount them up (they are held onto the rim with a lot of pressure), but otherwise no problems.

i have my 32" swampers on non stock wheels. i ordered some black steel rims from stockton wheel in california and they custom make the wheel to the exact backside setting and offset of the stock x wheels. that way you don't encounter any of the problems of using wheels that differ from the stock specs.

I have about 1200 miles on them now. All pavement and gravel so far (unfortunately), no curbs or anything nasty. Not really sure how much to ask for them.... they're about 115 new... Mainly I'd just need a good chuck o' cash towards 32's. I'd imageine the hard part would be getting them from St Louis to wherever you are.

Caver-X, I'm in New Jersey. Give me a good round number for your tires. What type of tires are they? BFG AT KO's or MT?

After doing some math, factoring in the cost of new 32's and what I can afford to pay, I don't think I'd be able to offer you a good price on the 31's once you factor in shipping.

Sorry,
Chris
