Generat Tire "Grabbers" have proved to be the most dangerous tires on an SUV since Firestones. They are like ice-skates on wet pavement. Numerous accidents and injuries have been attributed to them since they started production.

We all know people who have big problems with this tire and many near-disasters. Most of us try to replace them as soon as we can.

They are no longer put on Xterras because Nissan had so many complaints, yet no recall of these dangerous tires has been announced by General Tire. They should be recalled and replaced with SAFE tires by General.

In order to do this we need to start a campaign
to bring this serious problem to the attention of the National Highway Traffic Saftey Commission
of the US Government. Another option is to institute a CLASS_ACTION law suit for all owners of Grabbers. This will help to get replacement tires or compensation for the unsafe tires which we were sold with our Xterras.

All those who have had problems with their Grabbers and those who have had accidents should respond. A data base will be helpful in proving our case.

Dude!

Why didn't this get posted earlier!!!??!? I just replaced my set of grabbers one month ago. I only had 25000 miles on my stock set. If I could have gotten some cash from General Tire, that would have been sweet!

My neighbor has a new, 2002 Alpine Green SE, still has the paper plates from the dealer, and big 'ol General Grabbers . . .

When did Nissan stop using General?

I've seen Grabbers on 02's as well. I don't think Nissan stopped using them due to complaints. Agreed, the tires suck (at least off-road) and I got rid of mine after only 5K miles, but I think Mr. Let's Start A Class Action Law Suit is full of it. I don't know of anybody here who had an accident that was specifically attributed to having Grabbers on their X.

In fact (and not that I agree with this) I have seen Grabbers as being rated fairly high in some consumer mags for an all purpose highway tire.

according to http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/complain/comp2.cfm?SearchTopic=Tires (do a search for Make: General -> Model: Grabbers and leave the last list box unchanged), there are almost 50 complaints against this make/model of tire. glad my '02 doesn't have them (gonna switch to pirelli scorpions soon, anyway laugh ).

Hate to say it but 50 complaints out of hundereds of thousands of tires is insignificant. It's going to take a lot more than that to get anything going. That said; I agree they are lousy tires; possibly even worse than the BFG Long Trails that were used before them. Question is, are they bad enough for a class action lawsuit? Probably not, unless there are many fatalities associated with them.

I found the grabbers to be fine on pavement. I could slide if I chose to, but in a 4,000 pound rear wheel drive vehicle thats hardly surpising.
Sounds like some people need to learn to drive a bit more smoothly.

My only complaint is that they're not wearing out fast enough so that I can replace them with BFG's. laugh

I just replaced my Grabbers today with a set of 265/75-16 Pireli Scorpion AT tires. Only 3700 miles on the Grabbers and already wearing the tread down fast, not to mention the 2" sidewall cut in the left front.

I am with Ian.
Keep the BS off this board!!
They are still sold by the thousands every day, and they still come on Xterras.
Go to your dealer and see whats on them.

What sweatloaf, Ian and others have said.

They're still on the new X's dude, I don't know where you got your information from, but it's wrong. And I was just at the dealer yesterday.

As Chuck mentioned, 50 out of hundreds of thousands doesn't mean shit.

What other tires does Nissan equip Xs with?
My X has the BFG Long Trails. The X got Gen Grabbers for 01 and I guess for 02.

BFG LT's & Grabbers went on all models, all years. That's the only two I've really seen, an occasional(and I mean blue moon) BFG AT.

I think its safe to say that whoever this person is who started this string has not done any REAL research.....

1. Like everyone has said 50 complaints out of thousands does not constitute a class action suit.

2. Obviously Nissan is still putting Grabbers on their trucks, so they think that they are "ok" tires. Not the best but "ok."

3. Lastly, I think some people are always out to make a quick buck....

Driving too fast for conditions. All tires hydroplane depending on how deep the water is. There is only so much water a tire design is capable of moving out from underneath itself.

You class action people make me sick to my stomach. Always trying to make a buck, and blaming other people or products for your own ignorance and inabilities.
