ATs, as in All-Terrain, as in a real off-road tire? Not unless your dealer decided to have this done himself, no way in hell they rolled out of the factory on BFG ATs. Xterras have only come with BFG Long Trails, General Grabbers, and in 02 some come with BFG Rugged Trails (just the 17" on the '02s SE/SCs I think). Nissan wouldn't get a small batch of ATs unless it were for something special, like Jeep did with the Rubicon, otherwise they buy in large quantities to get a big discount.

Kudos to your dealer if they really did put ATs on, though they probably charged you a good bit more for them than they paid to have them put on.

Were (are) your tires the same size as what was reported in the news? I don't know of any 2000 Xterra that has 17 inch wheels.

Charlotte, NC - (Monday, August 19, 2002) Continental Tire North America, Inc. today announced that it is initiating a voluntary safety recall of 595,000 of its Continental P275/60R17 ContiTrac AW and General Grabber AW P275/60R17 tires. Consumers will receive free replacements.

The tires involved have DOT codes from 109 to 4400. They were produced between March 1999 and October 2000 and furnished as original equipment on 106,701 2000-model year and certain 2001-model year two-wheel-drive Ford Expedition and two-wheel-drive Lincoln Navigator sport utility vehicles. Approximately 60,000 of the tires are in the replacement market.

Still doesnt constitute for a class action lawsuit...

There have been many recalls in the past from all manufacturers from food to include entire vehicles....

A class acion lawsuit only mandates that in the case where mulitple injuries to different people has occured. Obviously this flaw in the tires have been caught and recalled for replacement. In the case of Firestone...there were many many injuries and still no recall. The recall only happened after the lawsuit was settled....

Those tires were never on the Xterra, so you are still full of shit.

Your attitude needs adjustment, the fact that the recalled GRABBER AW's are a different size shouldn't be much comfort.

NISSAN and General/Continental Tire need to fix their defective products BEFORE people get killed.

Because there have been none... I have the utmost confidence in my tires and my driving ability... any wrecks that have ocurred so far are, in my opinion, the result of bad driving (high speed + water = hydroplaning).

On that note, will someone please lock this thread up...

I am a new member but this is the first topic I wanted to get in on. My '02 xe has the Grabbers and I have read where Continental General is recalling some Grabbers tires that are on Ford Expeditions (I think they may have even been the replacement tires for the Firestones that were peeling). The generals in question are not the same size as those on my X but MY radar went crazy when I heard that. Let's stay tuned.
Has anyone heard about or have more info on this recall?

Why yes the tires do suck but the size they are recalling is not on the Xterra. Upgrade like all the rest of us have to a better tire and your worries are gone.

Yes, my tires do suck. But as Cheetara pointed out, though I was driving five miles under the speed limit I probably was driving too fast for conditions.

Would better tires have allowed me to establish better grip when I spun out and then banked hard to the right to spin back in? Who knows.

Like Eric said, hydroplaning isn't the issue with the recall so it's irrelevant in any case. I was at fault for my accident, and I have said so in the past. These tires do suck in wet weather in my opinion, but with better judgment(which I obviously did not exercise at that time) they're not dangerous.

Maybe you should just pull that Firestone out of your ass and learn to read a little.

I have a 2002 XE with 6K miles on it, I bought it new in January '02. I have done some light off-roading with Grabber tires deflated as recommended. the experience was enjoyable. On the road they are okay; as I keep them properly inflated (checking once a week). As the X is my first vehicle of this kind (hopefully more X's in my future), It drives noticeably different and reacts to road conditions differently than my last vehicle: a'99 Honda Accord V6. The X weighs over 2 tons with an overall area (width x length) not much larger than an Escort...some moderation and a respect for the turning, braking and acceleration characteristics of these vehicles is definitely needed and should be practiced by some.
