my owner's manual was stolen - and i just had my first flat...and i can't figure out how to release my spare from under the car...

The 'stuff' to change the spare is underneath the carpet in the cargo area.

You'll use the long shaft to 'uncrank and lower' the spare through the very small hole in the center of the bumper. It's hard to get the "T" in just right, but once it's in just crank it counter-clockwise (I think?) and your spare will drop down.
