Yesterday I went to Pepboys to get a price on a new set of tires. I wanted to go from 255/65R-16 General Grabber to 265/70R-16 All Terrain tire. Not too much of a difference. The guy at the counter tells me that I can't size up my tires because the tires would rub. Get This! He also says I can't get an All Terrain tire anyway because Xterras were not disigned to go offroad!! By this time me and my dad are looking at him like what the hell have you been smoking?? Call me crazy but why the hell would Nissan put skid plates on something not meant to go offroad? I'm now totally turned off Pepboys and will never walk in there again!!

I'm running 305/70/16's on a 2001 X...w/o rub problems (of course, the 2" BL helps). Lots of trucks have skids, even though they're not really tough enough to go offroad...but, the X can go off road alright....but we typiclly upgrade to real skid plates. If you are at stock height, 275/70/16's or so are fine. When the tires do rub, its just on a the ledge of plastic at the rears of the front wheel wells, where the mud flaps are mounted to....it takes a few seconds to trim off the plastic where it rubs, as it only rubs when the tires are turned all the way in one direction...I snipped off an inch to fit 33's.

Don't go to Pep Boys. If you're wanting A/T's, Ken Towery's in town is the place to go. And they won't give you a crap load of BS, either. Heck, when I had them mount my 33's, they looked at my truck and said, are they going on that? I said, "yep". They said, "They're gonna' rub." I said, "Not by the end of the day they won't." Had a good laugh, and off I went, no problems at all.
The one off Fern Valley Rd. & Preston Hwy intersection in Dah-Ville is the one you need to go to.

In the dumbasses defense, around here, other than JD's X, there isn't another built Xterra within 50 miles or more. Theres very, very few Xterra owners around here that aren't soccer-moms, so I can easily see how the pepboy dumbass would make that mistake, knowing what he's seen.

I've bought 4 sets of tires so far for the Xterra (one set of M/T's and 3 sets of A/T's) and all of them have been larger than stock size. I have yet to be questioned about my choice in tires or size. Maybe I just look like I know what I'm doing, so they don't question?
Of course I don't buy tires at Costco, Pep Boys, Wal-Mart, or Sears either, so maybe that's it!

Sounds similar to a yokohama dealer I called for a quote on replacing my Geolandar ATs last december. I told him what I wanted and in what size and what I was putting them on, he then told me I didn't need ATs on a 2wd vehicle, I then told him it was a 4x4. He gave me some smug reply and didn't even look up a price and told me that they'd be about $180 per tire (that's 2x what they should be)
So, I called a different dealer and had a set of Cooper ATRs by the end of the day.
My truck is stock except for tires, front hooks and a hitch, but it'll go off-road whereever I want to take it. It's funny how the guys down south in their mighty Z-71s look down upon Xterra owners

The guy at the local Tires Plus told me that unless I would be in atleast 10" of mud, not to bother with mud tires, all terrains would be plenty. I didn't even answer him, just turned and walked out.
