I may be installing a wig-wag flasher kit on my head lights for one of the jobs I work... (the kit is available from http://www.galls.com ) and I'm wondering if anyone out there has put one of these on their Xterra yet. If so was it hard to install?

I thought about it but went with strobes. I had them on my old s-10 blazer loved them. with the strobes and dash laser they work very well. I also added two white alley lights on each side.

i have the multi flash one from able products - easy to install just make sure to use plug in connections when you wire into the headlights so when you take it out it is much easier to get out and reattach the headlights - and yes they are needed when running on emergency calls - they move the traffic over better than most lightbars and can be seen further away

I have 4 corner strobes in the clear sections. I opted not to use the wig-wags as they needed to tap into an existing wiring harness and I was worried about voiding the warranty. The corner strobes run their own wiring and mount to its own spot in the fuse box. Plus, the dealer I bought the truck from is an authorized dealer for state contracts of police/fire vehicles. So they are factory authorized techs and with them doing the work, I have a much less chance of warranty issues. If you do come up with a kit that temporarily plugs into existing connectors that can be removed easily without a trac, please let me know what you did. I would be interested in finding out your method.

OOPS, forgot to mention that I chose to use 2 smaller packs - 1 for front, 1 for rear as they were solid state and water resistant and mounted them on the firewall. I couldn't find a place inside I was happy with. If you'd like, let me know and I will email you photos. Bill

[BUMP] I am installing a tailight flasher system in the X. Anyone done this? I'm using a cheap set from galls.
The Xterra has a 4 wire tailight system right? And if you have installed these, where did you put the isolation module?
Thx

Can you use "cheap" and "Galls" in the same sentence?? :-) I have installed the ABLE2 Microlight LED's and have been very happy with them.

The Xterra has a 4 wire tailight system right? Thx Sweet timing... I was going to post about this tonight too. I'm also about to install a taillight flasher in the rear. I've had too many close calls at accident/fire scenes of almost getting rear ended. Going to use this one.. Flashback Taillight Flasher because of the faster flash rate of 2.4 flash/sec and because it's got an auxilary output for some deck lights I'm going to mount in the lower front grill. I was going to remove one of the back side panels to mount the unit. Is this correct that the Xterra uses the 4 wire system? Any suggestions from anyone who's done this would be appreciated.

Gator, Did you install the strobes in the corner lenses, or in seperate lights? I was thinking about strobing but wasn't sure I could fit strobes in the corner lenses.

Less wire splicing and easier for someone like me(not good at electrical stuff) to do. I've some extra christmas money so that's what I'm doing with it. Hope your tailight flashers work out. If want to do strobes I can email you pics of the install when I'm done, (PM)

They're not really that expensive and get a whole lot more attention. And you don't have to butcher the stock wiring. Are you only putting strobes in the back, or all corners? I haven't completely ruled out strobes yet... so you may change my mind if they well for you! Definately keep me posted!

Lightning- if you are worried about the flash rate of your hazards, you may want to install an "Hyper Flasher" it's usually on eBay for about $15, it replaces your current flasher unit and make the lights blink like mad. It's also strong enough to work ok w/ my trailer w/ no issues.
just my .02

Don't look too highly on vehicle lights up there in NY huh? That kinda sucks. Here in NC, we're basically allowed to have red, white and amber for the vol. fire department on the dash or in the turn signals. Only Chief/Assist Chief are (officially) allowed to have any type of light bars on the exterior. Not allowed to have wig wag or flashing headlights or any blue lights, which are both reserved for police.
The more I think about it, the more I'd like to send back the flashers and go to strobes.
Anybody have experience to share with taillight flashers?

Here are a few images of my LED set up.. Overall view ABLE 2 Dash LED (red/red) ABLE 2 Microlight LED (all run off one switch) I got the white ones for the rear deck for Christmas and should have them up before our next big weather event here.

Depending on which LED you get they can be less expensive than strobe. They most definatly last longer than strobe and draw less current.
The ABLE 2 line is an in-expensive LED product and I am VERY impressed with the light output.
The "strobe" power supply I am using will support up to 12 LED heads. (less if you use white, blue or green LED's)

Bill I mounted my powersupply (6outlet) behind the shifter/coin dish near the extra 12v outlet. It fit perfect below the radio sheet metal and when the plastics are installed you can't see it.

Has anyone mounted strobes in the actuall headlights on the '02? Starting to toy with the idea of buying/leasing a Navara dual cab and useing it as a motorsport safety vehicl here.

Looks like a nice install. Do you have anything in back? I'm using a Dash King 2000 LED right now on front, though I think I'm going to get something brighter soon. The new LED's have come a long ways.

Ok, got my taillight flasher installed a couple weeks ago. Overall am very pleased with it. Clean install, everything's hidden, and gets everyone's attention.
BUT there's a slight pulsing that you can only notice when slowly coasing with the lights activated. To make a long story short, when the backup lights turn on, it's backcharging the transmission and telling it that's it's about to go into reverse 2.4 times a second (the rate of blink). So I've got to install a set of diodes inline with the backup light wire, before it splits to both of the taillights.
So my question is, does anyone know where the split is, and the easiest way to access it those wires prior to the split? It's after it comes out of the transmision, but I'm not sure where it enters the cab.
Would really appreciate some help if anyone knows. Maybe Electroken? It gets kinda nippy laying under a truck when it's 30 degrees out. Maybe somebody has a manual that tells?

Some one else had that problem and the trany went into safe mode and would only go about 30 mph. I added the clear strobes in my backup lens and clear in the front turn signal. as far as putting them in the headlight lens, if your headlights are on you will not see the strobes past 30' or so.

Finally Done!! Although one of the strobes I got from whelen was bad and I had to send it back, no other major problems. I ran the power from behind the rear seat between the rear seat and my rubbermaid box. I ran the strobe outlet cords through the latch on the rear seats with the existing taillight wires to the rear. Direct wire from the battery to the switch and directly to the power supply also. (as the power supply requires two seperate wires to operate) I ran these through a driver's side grommet and under the trim of the door frames to rear of the vehicle. This was the worst part, drilling 1 inch holes the plastic taillamp lenses. I used a unibit drill and it worked great! The only type of bit I would reccomend to not spider the plastic. I padded the grommet(not shown) and just pushed out the grommet forcing the wires with the existing wires. The strobes themselves fit into my drilled holes perfectly and do not come in contact with the existing lights. This was a major thing I was worried about. I did not setup a switch to change the pattern or flash power, I just set it to comet flash and high power. Also I haven't installed the switch yet, it's just loose in the vehicle. I will do all this as I have time. The pattern is set as grey stars flash simultaneously and white stars flash simultaneously, making white and grey flash oppositly. (of course white and grey are just for model's sake the strobes are all clear)

Thanks mmUTK & Xman6! Great write-ups and pics!
1. Where did you both put the power supplies? 2. mmUTK - Doesn't sound like you used a relay, correct? Think it might be a good idea?

I've got two strobes behind the grill and two hide-a-ways in the rear red's. Power supply is underneath the front passenger seat. No problems with room and with the all weather mats, no chance of wetness. Now just have to upgrade to a 90w from a 60w supply!
