I haven't even looked into it yet but was wondering if anyone had installed or thought of installing an LCD screen for the front dash. Is it possible? If so any recommended brands or site info? Thanks for the help!

If you drive a manual...you might have trouble installing the "flip out" type.
the shifter and the stereo are pretty close and this will probably give your problems.

This brings up another question......
I have always thought that screens (for watching TV or movies) were "illegal" in this country if they can be viewed by the driver. In general, I thought that it was ok to have them in the backseat.....or even the passenger seat. But they need to be in a spot that the driver cannot see it, so that drivers would not be tempted to drive and watch tv at the same time. We have a big enough problem with people talking on the phone and driving.....imagine what watching tv and driving would do!!
I guess I was wrong about that law.....or maybe its just in California or something.
I figure since stereo stores are offering a "in-dash" DVD system, that it "must be legal".
Does anyone know the answer to this?

I'm going to use it basically as a CD player with visual skins. I don't know if you've ever seen it but it's pretty tight. I'm also adding it because I'm a gadget junky. Thinking of maybe hooking up a cheap lap-top with a couple gigs of storage for MP3's.

Catch 22,, ( depending on local laws ) a screen is allowed for navigation purposes, but quite a few screens can be configured for both. Its up to you to use it properly. The best set up I've seen up to date is a screen & console that replaced the front map lights... but forget about using your rearview mirror.
I've got my laptop between my seats for long trips, connected to my GPS.. which works fine for me, but I do have the slow speed, shifter + screen conflict.. but that is what my wife's lap is for.

Have you looked here........ Circuit City or Circuit City #2 I see that you have an automatic...so you shouldn't have the problem of the shifter banging the screen, but I could be wrong.

in dash screens usually come with a safety feature that deactivates the screen unless the vehicle is in park or out of gear. but this can be bypassed

I have 2 LCD's, 1 mounted right about the glove box and 1 on the back of the center console. There are a lot of inexpensive 6 inchers on the market. Remember two things, price really doesn't matter because everything that small looks basically the same, and make sure you mount them well, or vibrations will make you sea sick when watching and moving.

Well the dealership didn't know the pinstripe was on it when they ordered it to be delivered so they took the cost of it into there own pocket. But yes, it came with it. I believe it's around $100. I think it adds a great touch with the shock blue, you should see it on a sunny day! Also does anyone know enough about LCD's to recommend a brand? THANKS!

Oh and for the LCD screens being illegal..... How come all the black people around here can have 10 LCD screens in there car then lol. one in each visor, one in the dash, 2 in the back seats, 1 in each door. It's ridiculus, I can post some links if you guys wanna see pics. I think you're more of a risk getting in an accident talking on a cell phone than having an LCD screen in your car. An LCD screen is more for looks, for the passengers.

haha, no no, I would never ruin my car by putting 10 LCD screens in it. In Columbus I may as well leave the keys in the car. But I have pics of the car that had it. The heritage festival is here every spring and all the black people come from all over with there pimped out cars. Last year LCD was the new BIG thing. Anyway here's the links. www.djkidneo.com/pimp1 www.djkidneo.com/pimp2

Hmmmm.....the guy in the picture doesn't look very "African-American" (Yes, here in California.....its not PC to call them "black people") I believe its "legal" to have as many screens as you want. As long as its not within view of the driver. (backseat is ok...in the dash is not)

hey kj_xterra the solution to your problem is that most in das lcd screen come with a sensor that will not let you watch a movie or tv stations unless the parking brake is set, although you can use the navigation features. as for the question for kid_capri, check out best buy they have a pioneer it looks pretty cool, if i get one ill get that one. laters

I was checking out the latest Crutchfield and I spotted some nice retractable in dash screens. Plus a sweet deal on a Panasonic DVD player. I would love to have an in-dash screen and a DVD player stack on on top of the other, that way both of the Dins would be filled up. I don't need anymore storage, plus keeping the screen and DVD player separate is cheaper.
Check out Crutchfield for ideas and products, but I have heard they over price, like a lot. I have no experience w/ them, just something I have heard.

I have a static 6" screen instead of the double din face. I cut out the ashtray piece below the double din and created another single din for my head unit. Works out well and cannot be seen from the outside.

Someone has a LCD or DVD in their car. Their parents must not love them. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA What a stupid comment.
It is so easy to get a credit card that it's easy for these "kids" to put pretty much anything they want in their rides.
Even if it was a parent who hooked up their kid's car w/ lots of A/V equipment, what's wrong w/ that. It's bitterness that gives you the point of view that's it's wrong to help your children out. I hope to help my kids install things into their vehicles. I don't care if it's engine mods or A/V upgrades.

. My comment had nothing to do with anyone adding a monitor or anything else for that matter. It was only in reference to the "kids have to much disposable income " statement. I see it every day here.

Cool. I just read the disposable income comment was aimed at the LCD/DVD installs and lumped your response in with it. My bad.

I often see kids driving around in new cars, with new rims, and all sort of other expensive additions. I assume that their parents get those for them - so their kids can have a "reliable" car that will not break down.
In my opinion, I think all the kids out there who are starting out should get a "clunker". Something that runs good, is safe, but not high on frills. (no CD/no ac/nothing power) This way, the kids learn to take care of their cars. They learn to jump start a dead battery, they learn what "burning oil" smells like. This will help them to value and take good care of their cars instead of taking it for granted. And it also teaches them some basic automechanics. (changing their own oil, identifying problems, etc)
That's how I started out, and I owe it to those experiences that I probably have better driving habits now, and I definetly know more about cars.
For the record, my first car was a 1981 Mazda GLC, with a manual cranking moon roof!! (this was in 1993) My second car was a salvaged 1987 Honda Accord (1994 - 2001). My third vehicle (and first truck) was my X.
Just my 2 cents.

I'm a 21 year old college student who drove a '94 buick skylark till January when I bought my 2002 Xterra. Key phrase there is I. My parents helped me in NO way with the purchase of this car other than co-signing. There are a lot of kids like me who save there money and then can afford big items like this car. It also helps that I started my own DJ company. Through hard work and marketing I'm making $1800/month on average. Not bad for a 3rd year college student. And why shouldn't I spend money on some fun stuff right now. This is the time to do it when I don't have to worry about bills or a lot of the nasty things life can bring. So anyway there's my thought on the whole thing
