Factory Looking Switches!

Hey gang... Last year I started a dialog with a manufacturer of automotive switches to get samples and volume pricing information.
The switches come in a variety of styles, but one in particular - and the one I'm using - suits us Xterra owners particularly when adding additional lighting or accessories. The switch fits into the stock factory pop-out on 2000/2001 models right on the dash without trimming. Simply snap in place. I don't have a 2002 handy, so I dunno about those...
The switches look almost 100% like stock ones, only very slightly off. A variety of symbols are available including driving/fog and headlamp, or none at all. LEDs are also an option that turn on with your accessory.
I chose the red LED, headlight symbol switch so that the LED matches the "security blinker" on the dash and the install is very sano. I'll have some sample photos up shortly.
Of course, in this location, there is only room for one switch. You can combine these switches if you fab your own panel or cut additional openings.
Anyway, I was thinking about getting a bunch of these switches, maybe even fabricating a "kit" consisting of a wiring loom, conduit, nylon ties, etc. for aftermarket lighting installations if there was enough interest. Anyone out there in Xterra land interested in such a thing?

I would only be interested in the switch since you really have no idea how/where/what I will be using it for.

What did they cost ya? Do you think I could wire it into PIAA lights? My lights came with the switches, but a factory switch would be nicer than stick on ones.

I have a few samples, but no pricing was discussed yet, since I need to know what kind of quantity we're talking about first.
As for using these switches with PIAA lights, well, you could use these switches with anything, really. They're 12v, on/off and the LED lights with the accessory (e.g. switch is "on").
They also come in on/off/on, with/without LED and in different colors and offer multiple symbols.
You know what? I'm gonna go outside and snap some shots now that the sun has come out... Be back shortly... :p

Here's a closeup shot of the red LED, fog lamp symbol switch... Note that it sits a little better in the cutout than it looks. I think I had a thick(er) connector or something that was hitting. This is a shot showing how it all ties in together: This is a shot of a green LED switch, with the fog light symbol and the rear of these switches, offering three poles (voltage in, out and ground). The fourth is not used:

BP - I'd be interested in one for an amp turn on/off, with a red LED.

I'd be interested... I've got a switch that I've got in that slot for my KC's... but it sticks out so far that I sometimes almost flip those on instead of the wiper! what other symbols do they come with? I think I'd want a green LED

The switches come basically as above, or can have just an LED or nothing at all. You can also have the entire switch light up. For those that can't decide, I can get something like this, as well:

Okay, I'll have to get in touch with the manufacturer again and see what levels of volume discounts I can arrange. Quite honestly though, I think we're talking about a level of 100 or even more...
In any event, I'll see what I can arrange!

Good find! So? These switches, are they available yet? I am always looking for switches for my CoolKits and those would be great for several apps. If the price is right! Most manufactures will sell sample kits of 10 or less switches as 'eval' kits. If you don't want to do this would you post the name so that I could contact them? I do bulk ordering and would be happy to re-sell them at cost plus shipping just to get them. Let me know!

I'll be in touch with them as to quantity pricing. The demand here on XOC has been kind of soft, though...

Could you repost those pictures from the first page again? I think I'd be interested in a couple as well.
(If they load for everyone else it might just be my computer here at work.)

Hey BP... put me on the list for one too. I am tired of the stupid ghetto switch, that I have now, sticking out. Would love to have something flush like that instead. Thanks

Yeah for some reason my computer at work wouldn't show the pictures, but if you can get them I'd definitely pick up 3 or 4. One question, would it matter if you took out the security light. I dno't use the stock alarm anyways, so even if I didn't disconnect the wiring I could just hide the whole unit behind the dash right?

I guess the later models have them on the steering wheel... BTW, I forgot to mention it's a 2001 SE model... I don't know if that makes any difference... Anyhoot, just my two cents... Hey BP, are ya still ordering the switches? With me and Xbertmx, we've got a running total of 7 or 8 units... Now you're down to 92 units that need to be purchased... Keep us posted, broddah... Thanks.. - Air B

UPDATE:
Okay, I've been in contact with the manufacturer about quantity pricing. I still don't have the final numbers, but that should be resolved over the next day or so...
The problem is that I'm dealing *directly* with the manufacturer, and "quantity" to them means on the order of 1,000 or more. But they're willing to work with me, so here's what I'm thinking.
What about an initial run/order of 100 or so of the red-lighted switches like the one I've shown here? That seems to be the most popular, and most factory-looking switch?
Failing that, I also asked about getting a version of the switch that allows for interchangeable light colors and symbols.
I'll keep y'all posted!

Awesome. Thanks for doing all this. I was just going to say, if they want quantity it might be better to go with the interchangable ones. Just because more people would get in on it that way. For instance, I was kind of hoping for the blue ones, but I'll still go with red if thats the color.
Thanks again.

So far it's looking like $6.00/switch for the red ones and $11.00/switch for the interchangeable ones... I could probably do better if the quantity were higher. These are both based on a 100qty purchase of each type (which I won't go near unless I can unload all these things!). Here's what we'll do. Everyone that wants switches, please Email me with your name/nick, number and type of switches. I'll pass on the final numbers to my source and vice versa and we'll get these ordered!

I'm still collecting interested party' orders... Keep 'em coming! Remember, Email me your name/nick and quantity. If I haven't responded to your Email yet, no worries - I've got a spreadsheet growing. I want to get the full/final numbers before ordering, so I can work out the quantity and pricing. I'll double-check on the amp rating, but it shouldn't be an issue, since you should be using a relay...

Well, I have to be honest... The demand so far doesn't really warrant much of a "quantity discount" so far.
If you haven't sent me your info yet, let's set a deadline of this coming Friday (Aug 2) and I'll tally everything up again and see what we've got.
Then, either we'll make a purchase for what we've got (probably be more expensive that way but we'll see) or just call it a day.

Okay, I think I've gotten all the responses I'm going to get on this. Give me a day or two to compile all the Emails/requests and I'll post the final numbers. We'll take it from there!

Xman6, yes... Gotcha. Okay, I've got a total of fifteen people wanting switches, totalling 18 "reds" and 14 "universals." A far cry from the 100 or so for quantity pricing, hmmm...
