Im sure you can get a new chip, but why would you want to be going over 95? The X isnt a sports car so it wasnt made to go that fast.

No chip, just an expensive reprogram.

95 isn't a legal speed limit in the US.

If you're going that fast, stay out of my state.

If you want to drive FAST then get a sports car........ It's that simple.
Just makes you wonder, what the hell goes on in some peoples minds.

I'm tired of seeing these kinds of threads go this way... He didn't ask if you thought it was a good idea or for an analysis of state laws... maybe he's modifying an X to be a drag truck to be used at a perfectly legal racetrack.

He asked if it could be done. Yes or No... and how?

Either answer the guy's question or don't friggin' post at all. (Now I'm being hypocritical here 'cause I don't know if it can be done... but [Save the fine unicorns] )

Is there a trend or something to flame people when they ask this question? Someone does it and everyone starts to sing along to the same tune.

I agree with Kaiser.

To answer the question: yes, it can be done. Find out who has the proper equipment (not sure what it would be but a lot of hi tech shops have it) and it would cost you anywhere from $200-$500 to have it done, believe it or not.

I was stating my opinion, which i can do.That is what the board is for. I am sure you guys are no angels on this board either, so relax.
If fact, you should practice what you preach.

I highly doubt he is going to drag his X. First off, if he is going to drag his X, he needs to do a hell of a lot more then just remove the govener. Your talking suspension work, drive trains, etc.......
Just removing the governer is not going to make your X a drag car. LOL morons

Oh, cut the BS, as long as people stay on the topic asked - fine. Otherwise people that have similar questions should start a topic right away that says "Please flame me, all you out there that have nothing to do".

No kidding, this isn't about drag racing, the X couldn't hit the governor in the 1/4-mile in the first place.

My 2000 v6 automatic X has a top speed of 104 on flat ground. Maybe you could get an ECU from a 2000 if you really wanted to remove the governor as it seems 2000's don’t have them. My Xterra handled just fine at 104 mph, no shaking or rattling, so there is really no problem going that fast or faster.

So has anyone else broken the 95mph mark? Its kind of hard to find out because all of the wineing pussies get threads like these closed every time so no one really knows (and don’t even start about the search).

They vary... many people have posted slightly different numbers. Mine ('00) tops out at about 97.

Kaiser when you say it tops out at 97, do you mean it hits a limiter at 97, or it just doesn’t have enough power to go any faster? I think with the limiter there is no way its going to go faster than 95 just because of how it’s programmed. But without the limiter top speed can still differ for many reasons like tire pressure, weather conditions, and weight inside the car. Since you have a 2000 too I don’t think it’s limited since its breaking the 95 mark.

Had a 2000 (5-speed) that maxed out at 94. Only tried it once, just to check (surrounding metro Atlanta afternoon traffic was averaging 85 - 90 in the two fast lanes).

Haven't pushed the 2002 that far, definitely not gonna try my wife's brand new 2004 anytime soon.

Drove a rental 2003 Xterra automatic in Miami (everyone there goes 100 mph [LOL] ) and it, too, topped out around 95-ish.

The governer's speed setting is dictated by the speed rating of the stock tires on a vehicle (not just the Xterra) in most cases. Most light truck tires have approximately a 93 mph speed rating on them. So, to push the speed higher is asking for potential tire problems. Think of all the mass of a truck tire spinning that fast...

It's stupid people like that, that i have to worry about when i am traveling on the highway with my family. Trying to go really fast in an SUV. Yeah real smart.
You say i am flaming? I do not think i am.
I think it is an unsafe idea. Especially if you are doing it just to go fast on the highways, or streets. If you are turning the truck into a drag car only then fine.
You cannot blame me for stating my opinion, when it comes to safety.

I'm not sure if it is a gov'nah (I'm feeling British this morning) or just the vehicle topping out...

Here's a question that'll get the flamesters going.... How fast have you been on a public road in any vehicle?

140 here.... those crossing guards sure were surprised :p (j/k there...)

I'm not a "flamester", but I'd be more than happy to throw some fuel on the fire you're trying to start...

115 or so, in my Jetta (wife's DD '01 1.8T 5-spd) - handled the speed really well. Stable, planted, etc - bit of wind noise, though. cool

I'll admit to being a bit of a pussy, as the car's top speed is actually 132.

When I was driving - 105 mph. That was in my parents' 1976 Cougar XR7, 351W 2bbl, auto. That was the drag, and horsepower, limited speed of the car (remember, in the mid-70's, this engine probably had all of 140 BHP). I've been a pussy since then. Only flirted with the 100 mph mark a couple of times since.

When I wasn't driving, when I was probably about 12 years old, I remember my Dad getting pissed off at a slow driver on the interstate, mashed the pedal into the carpet and pegged the speedo at 120 on the family Ford LTD before Mom yelled some sense into him. I thought it was fun.

That car was a "beginning of the emissions era" 1970 model with a honkin' 429 cid 4bbl. (That's 7.0 liters for all you modern-day metric folks). It's also the car I first drove when I got my license.

Just under 105 in my Saturn SL1. And lemme tell ya, that engine was SCREAMING.

Hah, my parents had a '77 LTD, much smaller engine I'm sure than Xorand's folks' had. We nicknamed it the "Poopship destroyer" because it was brown and rusty, but it had some get-up and go to it for quite awhile...well past 100K miles!
