I finally got a 14mm allen socket f/Snap-On to change out my rear end lube, is it like any other rear end in that it's filled correctly when the new fluid begins running out the bottom of the fill hole? Maybe a dumber question, the fill plug is a standard right hand thread, no?

Also, is it a Dana/Spicer unit, or another manufacturer?

Thanks, so new to my baby, though very familiar with my Jeep XJ.

What rear do you have? M226 (OR model or Manual Tranny) or the C200 model (X, S or SE w/ Auto tranny).

If it's the M226 then it's a Dana 44 variant rear end (though, no standard D44 parts will fit it).

But to answer your question, yes, standard threads and yes, fill to the bottom of the fill hole when level. If you have a lift, you might have to park on a slop facing down hill.

If it's the M226 rear it will take 4 1/4 pt of GL-5 gear oil (75w-140). You will also want to use Permatex Ultra Grey 82194 to seal the drain and fill plug threads.

If you have the C200 rear, you will need to get the gasket for the drain plug and use the Permatex Ultra Grey 82194 for the fill plug.

So, since I just ran at the mouth above...here are the specs.

M226 (OR model or S and X w/Manual Tranny) - Dana 44 Variant
Capacity: 4 1/4 pt
Gear Oil: GL-5 75W-140
Drail Plug Seal: Permatex Ultra Grey 82194
Fill Plug Seal: Permatex Ultra Grey 82194
Cover Seal: Permatex Ultra Grey 82194
Drain Plug Torque: 20 ft-lbs
Fill Plug Torque: 25 ft-lbs
Cover Bolt Torque: 31 ft-lbs

C200 (SE or X and S Auto Tranny)
Capacity: 3 3/8 pt
Gear Oil: GL-5 75W-90
Drain Plug Seal: Gasket (Nissan part) and Permatex Ultra Grey 82194
Fill Plug Seal: Permatex Ultra Grey 82194
Cover Seal: Permatex Ultra Grey 82194
Drain Plug Torque: 36ft-lbs
Fill Plug Torque: 36 ft-lbs
Cover Torque: 36 ft-lbs

If you take off the cover you will want to use Permatex Ultra Grey 82194 to seal it and the bolt torque specs are

Thanks for all that info - I should had been more specific. It's an S model w/auto tranny.

I am used to dana 30's and Chrysler 8.25's, just have to remove cover and use the rtv, no provision of draining.

Didn't realize the drain plug needed rtv and a new gasket. My parts guy provided with an exploded view of one rear axle, no illustration of diff cover or bottom of housing.

I noticed the oem fill plug did have grey rtv all around it, unlike my dana 30, just tighten and forget. I'll definitely need to use rtv with the new drain plug gasket for the C200 rear?

I really appreciate the time you took to provide both specs. I'll hit another Nissan dealer and get the parts you spec'd.

Thank you for all the time it must of taken to compile that info. It certainly is much appreciated.

No problem, I had all the M226 specs alreay in my head (I just changed mine last week) and just looked the C200 up in the service manual.

To be honest, since the M226 doesn't have a gasket on the drain plug, I am not sure what it really is (ie. what type of material is used, etc.). The Service Manual states to not re-use the gasket.

Thanks X2, Musikman. I bought some Mobil 1 synthetic 75W-140 for the rear ('06 XOR), and will be draining / refilling soon. I was pretty sure that I had read the owners manual correctly, but I saw another post that mistakenly called for 75W-90. Not wanting to make a mistake, I googled "M226 rear end", and this post came up.

As for the Permatex on the drain and fill plugs, I used teflon tape on my '01 X, and didn't have an issue. Somewhere, I read that Permatex on the threads (of the fill plug) could have a potential to fall inside when removing the plug. What are your thoughts?
