Does anyone know what is the recommended change for the timing belt on a 2000 SE V6? I just got a flyer from my local nissan dealer with a coupon to do it for $269. Says that 60,000 is the recommended time to change it, but also says that some vehicles may vary. laugh

I believe that the OWNERS MANUAL says 105K

You will find all that sort of information on page 9-6 in your OWNERS MANUAL.

Read it.. You will find all sorts of answers to silly little questions like that.

The owners manual service guide states 105k. Anytime after 60k is a good time to do the change. Nissans are "interference" motors...when that belt breaks, parts of your motor go 'bye-bye'.

$269.00 seems like a decent price IMHO - there's a lot of stuff that needs to be moved to get to that belt.

Yeah, what Brent sez below...

Have them change the water pump while they're in there as the timing belt has to come off for access. 105k is pushing it, I think it's good maintenance at 60-70k because of the interference engine. Beware of "come on" coupons in the mail as it's not unusual to get a $269 coupon and go out the door at $800+ with a pump, fluids and accessory belt. Use only new OE parts, not aftermarket or reman.

Good Luck!

I agree with Bruce...have the water pump done as well. I had a Honda years ago that needed a water pump so I had them do a timing belt at the same time, cost me like an extra $15.

They need to remove the pump to get at the belt (if i'm not mistaken) and they are generally designed to shit the weenie at the same intervals. Unless that is just what always seems to happen...spend HUGE $ for a timing belt and 5 days later the water pump goes.

Don't worry about changing the belt that often, everybody thinks that because its made of plastic that it more prone to break.

Goto the Automotive Customizers board and find out how many people with VG series engines have lost engines due to the timing belt breaking before 150k.

Save your money for when the exhaust manifolds crack.
