Ok,I have taken my x into the local Nissan dealership with a multiple cylinder misfire, they are first trying a fuel injector flush then say the next step is replacing the fuel injectors themselves and want over $1000 bucks to do the replacement. I am out of warranty with 78K on the truck. This seems too early to replace the injectors to me on a 2000 model year. What have been peoples experience with these and Nissans. Is this a job that has to be done by a certified tech, I'm pretty engine savvy, can I do it myself and save $400 in labor?

Have the timing and idle speed checked and adjusted if necessary. After that try a new Distributor Cap (and check the rotor). If you do it yourself it will only cost you about $20-$30 (for the cap). If that does not fix it then let the dealers do what they want. Only trust a dealer as far as you can throw them.

I've always been that same way '97. I have replaced the cap, rotor, wires, plugs etc. the truck has been running bad all summer, stalling at stoplights etc. When I got it back from the dealer after nearly $300 of diagniostic work they told me the distributor is what needs to be replaced. I guess when the tech pushes on the coils the rough idle and stalling goes away. I did a little reasearch into the injectors and priced them out on xterraparts.com compared to my dealer, my dealer ha a 40% markup for the parts. So I have a feeling I'll get the dist through them. I also went in with a list of TSB's from the internet and the dealer had only seen about half of the ones I had, very reassuring.

Both jobs seem like easy DIY's, but is the problem caused by the injectors or the distributor? For $300 of diagnostics they better be right, whatever the cause is.

Yes they did do that but it didn't help.

Got a new distributor, put it in, purrs like a kitten again. The install was very easy, I can't even tella difference in the timing although I probably need to adjust it. Problem Solved!
