akuria You could run a D44 in the rear - but it'll be weaker than the stock H233B... seems a shame to "upgrade" to a weaker axle to save a few bucks on gears/lockers.

At any rate, you want to keep the gears close to the stock Nissan gearing so it'll work right with the transmission... 4.9 or 5.13 is the way to go. I got all my D44 stuff (gears, upgraded shafts etc) from completeoffroad.com.

GIOregonsXterra The issue with the track bar is that the lower mount (The end that connects to the axle) is single-shear and it's broken on a couple people with disastrous results. People have been welding on little tabs that wrap around to the front side of the bolt to make it double shear.

Some pics of Carlton's fix HERE and HERE

I've been running it without modification for a year and a half with no troubles... but I check it ALL the time to make sure it hasn't cracked/moved and I'm currently only running 32's on the street.

The only reason to go to a D44 in the rear would be to go with 5.38 or 5.89 gearing (for tires larger than 35s which isn't recommended with D44s without going chromo and even then it's dicey).

ok so my best bet would be the D44 in the front and the nissan in the back.

what would the recommended gear ratios be for:

33" tires/ steel wheels
35" tires/ steel wheels

33s = 4.90 in the Nissan rear and 4.88 in the D44 axle.
35s = 5.14 in the Nissan rear end and 5.13 in the D44

***You asked for what we'd recommend...if you already have 4.90s you can run the 4.90/4.88 combo just fine***

What are the details of your rig? Auto? Manual? Supercharged?

Your stock rear axle gear ratio is 4.6 or 4.9. You said with 35" you can keep 4.9, how do you know if you have the 4.9 gears compared to the 4.6?

What would be the advantage from going from the stock 4.6 and 4.9 to the 5.14 with 35"s?

I am running 4.90 and 4.88 combo and have had no issues with lack of power at all. I am happy with my X right now. the current setup is Calmini SAS kit with 4.88's no bodylift and 33" BFG AT/KO's. the previous D44 owner has already relocated the tracbar to a better location. I am looking at upgrading my steering to the HD system that is floating around. I picked the mods that I have to run a 33"tire it is an all around better truck "For Me" in it's current setup. you need to think about what is going to work best for you and build it to thoes specs. if I was going to spend more time on the trail than road I wold have a BL, with 35's and 5.13's but I drive to much. so before you decide whats the best or what is the coolest, think about what you need. all these guys on here have great info. so listen up and decide carfully.

here is a pic of my truck for refrence. laugh
