Was this a replacement for the stock lights or in addition to?

Just last night I was looking at Hella lights and saw they had Off-road HID lights. At $650 a pop I almost fell out of my chair.

Can you take a picture with the lights off? What was your source for the lights? Did you replace entire unit or just the bulbs? Where did you mount the ballasts?

Okay, now are you talking a proper HID conversion, or did you just replace the bulbs?

People have claimed to do this in the past when all they actually did was put a set of PIA Xenon bulbs in there! smile

I love the look of the true HID lights, I had a kit installed on my car in England, made driving at night so much nicer. Much purer white light than the horrible yellow halogen.

Where did ya get the kit and how much $$$$ ??

I installed a real HID kit. I got from Xenon Depot. Its a 6500k xtreme kit. It was a fairly easy install, U just have to take ur time.

The drivers side ballast was mounted under the light. there is a small ledge down below ur light. the passeger was generally the same I just found a nice clean accessable spot. They come with doudble sided foam. so no drilling.

Below are quotes from the XenonDepot website FAQ. They seem to be somewhat contradictory. The refer to DOT approved products but there is no indication that the kit are DOT approved.

Do you still have high beam capability?

"Will I lose the ability to use the High beams?

For vehicles using a single H4, 9004, and 9007 bulb for both low and high beam , you will lose your high beam functionality.

Are these XENON HID light systems street legal?

Every jurisdiction has its own rules and regulations governing the use of automotive lighting. XENON HID lighting systems that are supplied with the vehicles from the factory are DOT approved.

NO XENON HID conversion kit available from any source is DOT approved if installed outside of the factory. Moreover, in the U.S, this is not street legal for use on public roads. As a result, we officially endorse the kit for exhibition and off-road use and will only sell the kit to be used for these purposes. We are not responsible for buyers who violate the terms of sale while in which they will assume all responsibilities for any unauthorized or unintended use other than exhibition or off-road use.

Our DOT approved line of HID products are completely street legal and are S.A.E approved."

Damn, $285 is pretty cheap for HIDs. Even if they were capable of being DOT approved, I doubt those are. Not being approved shouldn't matter much, the trucks are so new, inspectors and cops would probably just think they come stock. As long as you do a good job hiding the box with the big "Light Depot" stamp, shouldn't have any problems.

The thing they say about HIDs is that the light pattern is scattered because thats the way halogen headlights are made. So, you dont get a focused light beam. They say that you may need to aim the lights down, but I think that you just need some HID shields so you don't go blinding people.

well, yes HIDs are much more efficiant with Projectors (BMW,AUDI,BENZ etx) the projector gives better output, and has a clean cut-off. To be honest its not that scattered. Yeah if you buy any aftermarket HID system its not DOT approved, but who can tell? Everybody that asks me thinks my HIDS are factory

Its really hard to capture how they really look at night. especially with a camera phone. This by far has been the best investment Ive made. I love driving at night.

WTF? No high / low beam? That is enough for me not to buy them.

I personally hate the HID's when they are on someone elses car. I hate trying to see when one comes the oposite direction on a dark back road.
