I searched the threads and couldn't find this topic although I seem to remember reading it. With my new K&N open filter installed, my X won't idle. Right after install it lit up fine but would not idle. It kicked out quite a bit of brown/gray smoke (rich) although that cleared up after about 2 minutes of feathering the gas peddle. Funny but when it dies it will start right up but once the idle drops down like normal it just keeps falling till it dies. I believe I saw people saying they had to disconet their battery for the computer to "learn" and maybe that cleared up their issue.
The only hose not hooked up is the small vac. line that comes from the driver side fender. It's stock location was the base of the air. Could that be the problem? It seemed like it was only after ambient clean air.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

First, the vacuum line should have a connection in the K&N setup, but that isn't what's causing this problem. Have you checked to see if the MAF Sensor or the IAT Sensor are in any way messed up?

They were working fine with the stock set up just this morning. But my K&N is a home creation. I am believing that maybe my splicing of the two large breather hoses together may have some effect. I ran them togeather with a tee and then ran a 5/8 ID hose to the back side base of the air filter. This would provide a source of clean air or a place to vent PVC gasses into the intake tract but would not provide vacume to either hose. hmmmmm....could this effect the idle?

Fixed! It was either that the ECM needed a re-set or the two large pcv type lines needed the small amount of vacume the intake tract would produce at idle. I just plumbed them in like stock. Sensative little bugger!
And oh ya, this system rocks! Big gain in throttle response at 2000RPM and nice pull through 4000RPM. Sounds great also.
All this for $61.00.
Took about 6 hours to fab. A second one would take less than 3.
Any takers?

Maybe I'll go digital camera shopping this weekend. I was hoping to already have one for this project but I couldn't wait to just build it!
Here is the K&N part number RF-1040
4" throat,9" long, 5.75" x 7.5" oval tapering down to 4.5" x 7" at the top which is chrome. I used a 3/4" hole saw for a perfect fit for the air temp sensor.
This filter was $45.85 and 1/2" bigger in length and around the top and bottom taper than the kit filter. The kit filter is a 3" throat, so the plastic adapter tube is at least 2.75" or smaller in ID. My PVC tube is 3" ID and I adapted that up to the 4" for the filter to clamp to. Over kill? Maybe. I made the MAS sensor adapter out of sheet ABS and just dropped into a notch I cut in the sidewall of the PVC. I welded that in place with a couple of studs to mount the MAS plate. It works very well.
I'll try to get some photo's soon.

Like I said in my PM to you, be careful with the PVC piping. It releases bad stuff when it gets hot....

Hey Ag. I'm looking into the out-gassing you mentioned. I'm considering painting the thing. I'll use some catalyzed PPG acrylic and shoot it inside and out. Seal it up real nice. (solar yellow of course!)
I'll look into the compatability of the paint and the PVC. Ulimately I'd like to find some stainless steel tubing and finish it off proper.
You know how these projects are never done.

I wouldn't paint the inside, if it starts to flake it all goes inthe motor. My stainless tube came from ebay for $25 from a non-turbo eclipse. I just cut it down to what I needed.
