Greetings,

Happily, I am finally an Xterra owner.

I've owned several SUV's in the past, and have lots of Yakima roof accessories - bike, kayak, ski racks, and wonder if these can be attached to the tubular rack on the Xterra.

Thanks in advance.

JC

The Xterra rack was developed with Yakima and all the Nissan rack accessories are made by Yakima. You shouldn't have any problem as long as you have the correct Mighty Mounts.

Cool, thanks.

I found a website that sells Yakima and has a section specific to Xterra Agee\'s , was looking at Lowrider with my existing crossbars, but the factory rack should do - nothing I haul is very heavy so the Mighty Mounts should work great. 'Course, I may go ahead and get a set of lowriders anyway, in case I want to mount the basket (may as well use it!)

Thanks again.

Here is the list of Yakima racks that can mount directly to the Xterra factory crossbars:

With Vertical Mightymounts: Ski/Snowboard racks

With Horizontal Mightymounts: Kayak saddles, stackers, hull raisers. Gunawale brackets. Wheeled mounted bike carriers. Warriors. Boxes may needs different mounting hardware due to the width of the crossbars.

One more thing, X-Tower is stronger than Lowrider on the Xterra. The rail on the X is simply too big for the Lowrider to grab firmly. It's probably not an issue is you're not carrying a lot of stuff up there.

Thanks for the response Enzo.

I've ordered some Mightymounts - will soon get a Loadwarrior, but for now will mount my most used accessories (for bike, kayak & paddle, skis) straight to the bars of the factory rack.

I was entertaining the idea of using both factory rack and either Lowriders or X-Towers with crossbars to extend one of my bicycle mounts out to the side of the Loadwarrior (so it's sitting just on the edge of the top of the truck). I saw a photo within this forum's posts (JohnnyX's X, I believe) and it looked great, but no explanation how it was done. At 5'7" it would be great to get the bike out there, and as low as possible (I do carry a small wooden stepladder  )

By the way - Agee's was cool to deal with. They matched lowest price found, called me to clarify my order, and shipped right away. While I saw the Loadwarrior mentioned elsewhere for $200, their price of $220 ain't bad.

The set up with the inverted X-towers and extra long bars is called the "Ape Hanger" Mod. JohnnyX (From AZXC/NCCX) has them.

Here is a link to JohnnyX personal picture site, there might be some better close ups for you to study.

Just found this close up pic:

I believe David Moore was the first to do that mod and he was the one who named it "Ape Hanger". He used to have a detailed step by step installation on the web - but it has since been taken down.

ok, I just searched in the parts forum for keywords "Ape Hanger" and found these options for your researching needs:

ok.

Thor Mod = See thru deflector

Lobo Shelf Mod = Adds shelf in the ceiling of the cargo area.

Ape Hanger = (see previous posts)

"Mosi-ed" = Dragging the rear of the Xterra over rocks or other terrian and smashing the tailpipe.

Did I miss any?
