http://mcmcweb.er.usgs.gov/drg/free_drg.html This site has links to websites that have made USGS DRG's (Digital Raster Graphics), essentially scanned in paper topo quads, freely available. I know that many of you have purchase maps and software such as Topo USA 2.0, but I figured that this would be a good resource for others. Especially those of us that live in states where that have no sanctioned OHV trails authorized for 4x4 use ------------------ :wq! 2000 Silver Ice SE 4x4 5Speed Southeast Xterra Club

Speaking of Topo stuff, I highly recommend Wildflower Topo States Series (recently purchased by National Geographic). Expensive, but it easily puts DeLorme's novice attempt to shame in quality, ease of use and speed. http://www.topo.com/products/state.html I also tried Maptech Terrain Navigator, but after finding a dozen fatal bugs and design flaws, I returned it (can't name routes at creation, have to rename them after, can't give meaningful names to waypoints during creation of a route, have to do each one after, route name uploaded to GPS unit changes and has to be renamed on the GPS). The interface was also cumbersome, based on their old 16 bit version. Downloading scans is fun, and useful if you're traveling out of state, but if you wheel in one state, drop the cash on Topo State Series.

I have looked at them before, and considered asking on the board what people thought of them. I don't see Alabama on the list though.... I am not suprised in the least bit. The only place I can get digital topos on line for Alabama are topozone.com and terraserver.

The best price I found was at 4x4books.com (I think that is the URL). About $50 cheaper. ($150 vs $200). Dick

DickI have heard great things about these. Unfortunately, only 20 states are available. And none of them are anywhere near mine!
