Last night we got nearly 6 inches of snow. I go out to the X and I have trouble getting away from the curb (I live on a brick street, by the way). So I decide to shift to 4 Lo, no big deal, except I grind it almost everytime.

I know all the 4x4 basics like, unlocking the hubs, shifting out of four wheel drive when on dry or solid pavement, and which setting to use when.

But it seems as if I just can't make the smoothness of the shift. I'll put the automatic transmission shifter in Neutral and then shift the 4x4 lever and when it gets into it's Neutral I grind into 4 Lo.

When I got out of the car I kind of smelled something burning?? I guess it could have been the tires from where I was peeling every corner of the brick roads with all that snow and ice, but I wouldn't think it would be that noticeable.

I need some help, it's starting to make me look bad with people in the car.

Not sure what is going on with the grinding (I have a 5-speed) but...

4LO for 6" of snow?

Why such a brutal gear for something that 2wd should handle (heck, even 4HI)...that's most of the fun with owning rear wheel drive, sliding corners and such.

Yeah! I know sliding the corners is fun, but I needed to get out of my parking spot. As I was backing up, I was sliding into the curb because of the wet brick, I simply had little traction. I ended up doing a 90 degree slide while trying to pull away from the curb in 2H, so I flipped down the sunvisor and read, "4Lo-for use on slick or snow covered roads". It all clicked then, so I shifted to 4Lo. I got out in no time, so I went cruising the brick streets sliding all over the place. laugh

You're not shifting it fast enough.
Do not hesitate when the shifter travels through neutral between 4Hi and 4Lo.

If you stop in neutral, with an automatic transmission, it will grind like crazy.

If you're sliding the rear, you don't have control... put it in 4WD.

I understand that if it's sliding there is NO control...but, that's why I said it's most of the fun of having rear wheel drive...

"Sliding corners and such" in the snow.

YXterra knows that and recognized it in his next post when he said he got going, switched back to 2wd and slid around...
