Pope John Paul II may have written an epistle stating the benefits of praying to Mary and perhaps commentary on her purity. From the New Testament and in Catholic doctrine, she and Jesus are the only human beings conceived without original sin. In that sense, they are the same.

But really, you can pray to whomever you want. As a Catholic, I don't dial
up deep to JC for the big stuff and keep St. Ignatius on the back burner for help with bunions.
