and sometimes it helps to take come coolant out so that when you take the hose off, it doesn't drain out onto your hand or paint.
but other than that, mcmill is right on the money with that one. if you aren't sure that's the problem, take it off and test it by putting it in boiling water, if it opens, then you may not need to be changing the thermostat.
