When I just put my new system in the first thing that I put in was the new head unit to see what it sounded like with the stock speakers and it was a big improvement. The Kenwood is rated at 22 watts/channel RMS 45 peak. There are many companies out there that make very nice double din cd/tape/tuner units.
Alpine/JVC/Pioneer/Clarion..... The only thing is that they start about $350
