The only part that truly is vulnerable is the cap. Here is a pic of the rear diff on my wheeling rig. I've had this axle in several different vehicles over the years and it has been drug over 1000's of rocks.

As you can see, I could use a beef'd cap on my own rig since I managed to dent in the stock cap backing into something. The bottom has some scratches and that's it.
