Update. The deed is done.

After trying and trying and trying to get the knob off using nearly all the tools I possess, I took a knife to it. There sure is a lot of rubber to cut through. When I finally got down to the knob "core," I managed to rip the knob off. The core was left on, and I finally got that wrenched off. Needless to say, this was a b!+C# to do. The bleeding has started to stop, and tomorrow I'm going to be looking for a new shifter knob. The one I was going to put on doesn't look quite right, but it'll do for tonight.
